Hello!! I'm posting here because this website was so helpful with me before and i actually have a problem with my mother's computer that i need fixing. The problem is that whenever windows xp boots, it just goes to a black screen. It blacks out while the words "windows xp" is on the screen and the little bar on the bottom is moving, showing that it's loading. In the middle of it, the screen just turns black and nothing happens. I can't even make it to select any names. I tried to boot it in VGA mode but it did the same thing. I tried last known good config but that lead no where as well. I tried booting it in safe mode and it stops at agp440.sys and stays stationary. I also brought up the windows recovery console and put in "chkdsk /r" and it took a long time to finish. It said that it fixed one or more errors on the drive. But, when i boot it back up, it goes right back to that black screen. I'm not really sure what to do next and i'm baffled. I was thinking that maybe the master boot sector was messed up but i'm not too sure what to do anymore to fix this problem. If you guys can give me any insight on what else i could do, that would be greatly appreciated!! Also, if there's any other info you need, just let me know!! Download Windows Recovery Console: http://www.thecomput...om/files/rc.iso
Download, and install free Imgburn: http://www.imgburn.c...hp?act=download
Using Imgburn, burn rc.iso to a CD.
Boot to the CD...let it finish loading.
When the "Welcome to Setup" screen appears, press R to start the Recovery Console.

Hello!! So i've done everything that it said for me to do on the website however it's still doing the same thing. On the website, it says to use /NOEXECUTE=OPTIN as an OS Load Option if you are the owner of a CPU featuring Intel’s XD or AMD’s NX buffer overflow protection. I wasn't sure if i had those or not so i just used /fastdetect on it's own without the /noexecute. Also, when i put "CHKDSK /r/f, it stayed around 50%-60% for hours. On a safe mode boot, it still stops at agp440.sys. And, now when i choose an OS, it has two options. The orginal "Microsoft XP Professional" and the one i named "Windows XP Professional Edition". Both of them don't boot up at all. If there's anything i did wrong or if there's something else that i could do, please let me know. Thank you for your time!

I suspect, you may have bad hard drive.

I opened up the computer and i found out i had a seagate hard drive. I downloaded seatools for DOS and ran the long test. After it ran, it took me that the hard drive passed the test. I was very surprised that it passed so i'm not really sure what to do next. It's still loading up with a black screen as before. Could it be a virus or something? Thank you for your time!!

I still suspect some hardware problem, but.....

Go back to Recovery Console, and disable agp440 service, as described here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/324764

I agree with you that i think that it's a hardware problem as well but the hard drive did pass the long test. I still don't understand why. I disabled the agp440 but it still doesn't work. It still a black screen on a normal boot and in safe mode, it now stops at mup.sys. Also. i don't know if this will help at all but when i restart my computer, it always says that windows did not start successfully and gives me the choice of safe mode, safe mode with networking, safe mode with command prompt, last known good config, and normal boot. I'm not sure if that info will help you but i wanted to let you know anyway just in case.

MUP.SYS is rather nasty problem.
Nasty, because there is not sure solution to it.

As of now, i'm not really having any luck getting rid of this mup.sys hang. Tonight, i'm going to try and do EVERYTHING that they say in the two links and i'll get back to you as how things work out and all of the work i've done.

At this current point, i tried some of the things on the first link with no success. However, by following the second link, i actually got my computer up and running. I'm not completely done with the instructions yet but i'm taking the opportunity to back up all of my files to my external hard drive. Once i'm done with that, i'm going to finish the directions on the page so if i really do need to reinstall windows, i'll be able to have all of the files and programs i need. I'll probably send you a reply later on tonight or tomorrow with the results. Again, thank you so much for your time and patience.
