My Compaq Evo laptop has suddenly started up with the safe mode menu options. No matter which choice I make it just returns to the same menu. I have tried using the recovery disk but it doesn't give me an option to repair the os just to format the partition. I can't get to the bios I'm just stuck with this menu over and over again
Can anyone suggest anything, I don't want to lose my files
Many thanks

1. If you have Windows CD, follow the steps from here: http://icrontic.com/...pair_windows_xp

2. If you don't have Windows CD...
Download Windows Recovery Console: http://www.thecomput...om/files/rc.iso
Download, and install free Imgburn: http://www.imgburn.c...hp?act=download
Using Imgburn, burn rc.iso to a CD.
Boot to the CD...let it finish loading.
When the "Welcome to Setup" screen appears, press R to start the Recovery Console.
Then, follow the steps from here: http://icrontic.com/...pair_windows_xp, starting below this picture on page 1:

Tried that but all I get after loading is a black screen telling me that 'The recovery console provides system repair and recovery functionality. Type Exit to quit the RConsole and restart the computer'. Then a C prompt.
If I type Exit I end up back to were I began with the safe mode options. Tried to enter Windows at the prompt but it just says The command not recognised Type help for a list of supported commands

If the part marked below is missing:

it means, Windows installation is not found.
One of the possible reasons, would be bad hard drive.
Run hard drive diagnostics: http://www.tacktech....ay.cfm?ttid=287
In any case, you're facing Windows reinstall, but running above test is crucial, because, if the hard drive is bad, then it doesn't make sense to try Windows reinstallation.
