HOW DO YOU READ A FILE TYPE THAT IS "INDEX"

I tried to open this with a word pad and saw some chat script but saw squares also and some unknown character, what can decode this? please help.

Index on its own is just a filename. Without an extension (the three letters after the full stop) there's no way of knowing which program it belongs to.
The fact it opens as effective gibberish in Wordpad means its not a text file so it may be a data file or something that can only be opened in a specific program.

i found it in my yahoo messenger folder.
also i already tried to check it my right click properties what i got were

General: Search
File Type: INDEX File

The most common are:

index.dat
index.htm
index.html

Index is the compressed file of everything you did in your PC or files download with the index file in it.

You can delete them from your PC as only take space. System doesnt use
the Index files.
Download Easy Cleaner, is a small program, safe and not malware/spyware.
Google for is from Tonyarts.

Do an unnecessary clean up and delete the index files.
These files will go to your Recycle bin and they wont delete.
Do a quick boot and then empty your recycle bin.
