I've run through everything on the "You must read this before posting a HijackTHis Log" at least a dozen times now. Any help would be much appreciated.

Norton contiually identifies both Adware.CoolWebSearch and Adware.Iefeats though the instructions to manually remove them don't work (and dont seem to apply to what's going on with my computer).

Spybot Search & Destroy continually finds, and removes URL.SearchHook.Atplz

Anyway, thanks again.

Hi lester,

Please read this post completely, it may make it easier for you if you copy and paste this post to a new text document or print it for reference later.

This will likely be a few step process in removing the malware that has infected your system. I encourage you to stick with it and follow my directions as closely as possible so as to avoid complicating the problem further.

You have a nasty CoolWebSearch infection. First we will need to download a few tools that will help us in the removal of your problem.

Download about:buster by RubbeRDuckY Here.
Download CWShredder Here.
Download SpSeHjfix Here.
Download and install CleanUp! Here

Save all of these files somewhere you will remember like to the Desktop.

Unzip SpSeHjfix to its own folder (ie c:\SpSeHjfix)

Run the CleanUp! installer. You dont need to do anything with it right now.

Update About:Buster
  • Unzip the contents of AboutBuster.zip and an AboutBuster directory will be created.
  • Navigate to the AboutBuster directory and double-click on AboutBuster.exe.
  • Click "OK" at the prompt with instructions.
  • Click "Update" and then "Check For Update" to begin the update process.
  • If any updates exist please download them by clicking "Download Update" then click the X to close that window.
  • Now close About:Buster
Update CWShredder
  • Open CWShredder and click I AGREE
  • Click Check For Update
  • Close CWShredder
Boot into Safe Mode:
Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

Please run about:buster by RubbeRDuckY:
  • Click Start and then OK to allow AboutBuster to scan for Alternate Data Streams.
  • Click Yes to allow it to shutdown explorer.exe.
  • It will begin to check your computer for malicious files. If it asks if you would like to do a second pass, allow it to do so.
  • When it has finished, click Save Log. Make sure you save it as I may need a copy of it later.
  • Reboot your computer into safe mode again
Run about:buster again following the same instructions as above, this time without the restart at the end

Now run CWShredder. Click I Agree, then Fix and then Next, let it fix everything it asks about.

Now run SpSeHjfix. A log will be saved in the same folder that you put the exe into. Please post the results of that log in your next reply.

Now run CleanUp!. Click CleanUp and allow it to delete all the temporary files.Reboot your computer into normal windows.

Please run an on-line virus scan at Kaspersky OnLine Scan or if that doesnt work, you can use TrendMicro or BitDefender. (Please post the results of the scan(s) in your next reply)

After all that, please post back with how things went as well as the logs requested and a new HiJackThis log.

Thanks so much for helping me out. I'm getting frantic...

I went through every step as you said, though both AboutBuster and CWShedder said they were unable to update (which may mean I have current versions and definitions for all I know).

Additionally Kaspersky stalled out after a few long hours, Trendmicro crashed IE, but BitDefender did run. Hopefully the report it generated will look OK...

Thanks again. You're a hero.

Let me know what's next.

Nice. That seemed to take care of the bulk of my problems, though Panda still found some things.

For the record, the folowing were the only two files present that I could delete.

C:\WINDOWS\system32\sdksy32.exe
C:\WINDOWS\d3pp32.exe

Thank you so much. And I will put my money where my mouth is...

What's next?

Hi Lester,

Next round.

Download a free 14 day trial of Ewido from the link below. Install it, start it and upgrade when prompted but do not run it yet.

Ewido

Download

Pocket killbox

*Click Here to download Killbox by Option^Explicit.
*Extract the program to your desktop BUT do not run it yet.

Set up PC to show hidden files

Boot PC into Safe Mode

Click Start > Run > and type in:

services.msc

Click OK.

In the services window find Service: Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Helper ( 11F#`I).
Rightclick and choose "Properties". On the "General" tab under "Service Status" click the "Stop" button to stop the service. Beside "Startup Type" in the dropdown menu select "Disabled". Click Apply then OK. Exit the Services utility.

Rescan with HJT and check the following entries.

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = res://C:\WINDOWS\system32\jxrat.dll/sp.html#28129
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = res://C:\WINDOWS\system32\jxrat.dll/sp.html#28129
R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing
O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {85d1f590-48f4-11d9-9669-0800200c9a66} - %windir%\bdoscandel.exe (file missing)
O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: Uninstall BitDefender Online Scanner v8 - {85d1f590-48f4-11d9-9669-0800200c9a66} - %windir%\bdoscandel.exe (file missing)
O16 - DPF: {5D86DDB5-BDF9-441B-9E9E-D4730F4EE499} (BDSCANONLINE Control) - http://www.bitdefend...can8/oscan8.cab
O23 - Service: Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Helper ( 11F#`I) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\system32\netmg32.exe (file missing)

Ensure no windows open except HJT and click FIX CHECKED.

Using windows explorer locate the following and deletye the entire folder

C:\Documents and Settings\Diablopop\

double-click on the killbox folder, then double-click on Killbox.exe to start the program.
*In the killbox program, select the Delete on Reboot option.
*In the field labeled Full Path of File to Delete enter the file paths listed below ONE AT A TIME (EXACTLY as it appears, please double check to make sure!):

C:\WINDOWS\system32\jxrat.dll/sp.html#28129
C:\WINDOWS\system32\netmg32.exe

Press the button that looks like a red circle with a white X in it after each one. When it asks if you would like to delete on reboot, press the YES button, when it asks if you want to reboot now, press the NO button. Do this after each one until you have entered the LAST file path I have listed above. After that LAST file path has been entered, press the YES button at both prompts so that your computer restarts. If you receive a message and your computer does not restart automatically, please restart it manually.

Reboot back into SAFE MODE.

Run the ewido program
Scanner button, Select drives if you have more than one and then start.

grab a cup of coffee, sandwiches, book as this may take some time. Once the first problem is detected ensure you tick the box for all (bottom left) and allow it to continue.

At the end of the scan, it may ask if you would like to delete anything found in archive or zipped files, OK that request, then click on save report. SAVE to the default location, it will then generate a text file. Copy that to post in this thread.

Reboot pc into normal mode and carry out another HJT scan and post the log back here, so we can sort out any remnants

Here's what's left. I can take a few guesses at what needs to be fixed in the HiJack This log, but I'll leave that up to the professional.

Hi Lester,

I bet you guessed right. I'm getting annoyed wirh this one now. :tazz:

I would suggest printing this one out as it involves several reboots.

Reboot your computer into Safe Mode. You can do this by restarting your computer and continuously tapping F8 until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode, then hit enter.

Run CWShredder
-Next, click on the: Fix button
-Follow the prompts, and press OK

Run AboutBuster and save the logs
*Browse to where you saved AboutBuster and run AboutBuster.exe.
*Click "OK" at the directions Read: Important! prompt.
*Click "Start" and then "OK" to allow AboutBuster to scan for Alternate Data Streams.
*Click "Yes" at the About:Buster prompt to allow it to shutdown explorer.exe.
*Please wait while AboutBuster scans your computer for malicious files. If it asks if you would like to do a second pass, allow it to do so.
*When it has finished, click "Save Log...". Make sure you save it as I will need a copy of it.
Click "Exit" and "Exit" again to exit AboutBuster.

Run CleanUp!
-Make sure it is on Standard Mode
-Click the "CleanUp!" button

Run Ad-Aware
Reconfigure Ad-Aware for Full Scan as per the following instructions:
In the Ad-Aware main window, click on the gear icon at the top of the screen to open the preferences window. In the "General" window, make sure the following options are selected:
1) Automatically save log-file
2) Automatically quarantine objects prior to removal
3) Safe Mode (always request confirmation)

Click the "Scanning" button on the left-hand side and make sure the following options are selected:
1) Scan within archives
2) Scan active processes
3) Scan registry
4) Deep scan registry
4) Scan my IE Favorites for banned URLs
5) Scan my Hosts file

Please also click on "Select drives & folders to scan" and select your hard drive(s). Then click the "Advanced" button on the left-hand side and make sure all the options under "Log-file Detail Level" are selected. Next, click the "Tweak" button on the left-hand side. Click on "Scanning Engine" and make sure the following options are selected:
1) Unload recognized processes & modules during scanning
2) Obtain command line of scanned processes
3) Scan registry for all users instead of current user only

Click on "Cleaning Engine" and make sure the following options are selected:
1) Always try to unload modules before deletion
2) During removal, unload Explorer and IE if necessary
3) Let Windows remove files in use at next reboot
4) Delete quarantined objects after restoring

Finally, click on "Safety Settings" and make sure the following options are selected:
1) Automatically select problematic objects in results lists
2) Write-protect system files after repair (Hosts file, etc)

Click on "Proceed" to save the preferences. Then please click the "Start" button on the bottom left side to begin a scan. Select "Use custom scanning options" and then click "Next". Ad-Aware will then scan for malware. When it is finished, make sure any objects listed in RED are selected and click "Next" to remove the objects.

Reboot in normal mode.

Make sure you are disconnected from the Internet, all other programs and windows are closed and run HijackThis again. Please place a checkmark next to the following items, if they exist, and then click "FIX CHECKED":

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = res://C:\WINDOWS\system32\jxrat.dll/sp.html#28129
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = res://C:\WINDOWS\system32\jxrat.dll/sp.html#28129
R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing

Close HiJack This and reboot your computer into Safe Mode. You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping the F8, then highlighting "Safe Mode" on the menu then hitting enter. Delete the following files if found (in bold):

C:\WINDOWS\system32\jxrat.dll

Reboot your computer into normal mode.

Open HiJackThis, click on "None of the above, just start the program". Now, click on the "Config" button (bottom right), then click on "Misc Tools", then click on "Delete an NT Service" a window will pop up. Enter the below item into that field (copy & paste!):

11F#`I

*IMPORTANT NOTE* Make sure there is a SPACE before the first "1" otherwise it won't work!

Click OK.

It should pull up information about the service, then ask if you want to reboot. Click YES.

Rescan with HJT and post the log back.

Wow. I couldn't locate the jxrat.dll file, but everything else seemed effective (to me at least). Below are the AboutBuster and HiJack This logs.

Again, thank you for helping me with this little nasty.

Hi Lester,

Good teamwork Buddy. That floored it

From your log, I see nothing in the ways of trojans, nor any evil entities attempting to possess your computer, except for Windows but it's too late for that one.;)

Congratulations your log now appears to be clean. :tazz:

Here are some tips, to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future, I strongly recommend installing the following applications:

Detect and Remove Programs:
  • How to use Ad-Aware to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Ad-Aware.
  • How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.
Prevention Programs:
  • Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
  • Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
  • IE/Spyad <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
  • Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
Other necessary Programs:
  • AntiVirus Program<= An AntiVirus program is a must! Whether it is a free version like AVG or Anti-Vir, or a shareware version like Norton or Kapersky, this is a must have.
  • Firewall<= A firewall is definatley a must have. Two good free versions are Sygate and ZoneLabs.
  • More Secure Browser<= Internet Explorer is not the most secure and best browser. There are safer and better alternatives available. I recommend Firefox, however Opera and SlimBrowsers are good as well.
And also see TonyKlein's good advice
So how did I get infected in the first place? and AntiSpyware Net's spyware article: Spyware, Adware, Malware: What it is, how it got on my computer, how to get rid of it, and how to prevent it.

Excellent! Though I'm not sure teamwork had anything to do with it...

You kick [bleep]. I donated to your paypal account, and I wish I could so more, but the exchange rate is pretty abysmal from our side. If you'd like, PM me with a mailing address and I can send you a copy of my most recent album. Maybe it can give you a some sense of accomplishment (hopefully you won't feel like you've wasted your time!).

Thanks again. And if there's anything audio or music-related I can ever do, don't hesitate to ask.
