I seem to have picked up some kind of virus/adware that will not go away no matter how many times I scan with spyware detectors. I have downloaded and used Sypware Blaster, Microsoft Antispyware and Spybot - Search & Destroy, but nothing has taken it away.

I get pop-ups telling my computer is infected and others for online dating and gambling, etc. My background is also a blue color and tells me there is a Security Warning - A Fatal Error Has Occured and then tells me is has been caused by Trojan-spy.HTML.smitfraud.c . That is also accompanied by a flashing yellow exclamation mark in my quick launch bar.

I ran through your procedure of doing Ad-aware SE and CWShredder, Spybot S&D, Trend Housecall (I had already scanned with Norton Anti-virus and both picked up nothing) and then TDS-3. I then downloaded and updated my Windows XP with SP1a and that didn't take care of the problem.

Here is the log I got from Hijack This. If you need anything further please let me know. Thank you in advance for the help!!

Thank you for your help. I did everything you told me to do but a few things I was not able to complete.

When you had me go to ‘open uninstall manager’ I didn't find:
Security IGuard
Virtual Maid
Search Maid

Then in the next step when you had me go to 'open processor manager' and 'kill process' for:
c:\bsw.exe
C:\WINDOWS\popuper.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\msole32.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\intmonp.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\msole32.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\shnlog.exe
C:\Program Files\Visual Networks\Visual IP InSight\SBC\IPClient.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\intmon.exe

but it didn't even find c:\bsw.exe and for the other 6 it gave me this message:

'The selected process could not be killed. It may have already closed, or it may be protected by Windows. This process might be a service, which you can stop from the service applet in Admin Tools and said to Run : services.msc.'

I was then able to check every R1, R0, etc. from the list in HijackThis and it 'Fix Checked'.

A few steps later I found C:\Program Files\Virtual Maid and C:\Windows\System32\Log Files and deleted both of these files.

After that reboot the screen, which had the message about the trojan-spy.HTML.smitfraud.c on it before, was then black with no message. After the next step of merging the downloaded document with my registry, the screen came up blue with no error message.

I then did everything else and finally ran Ewido. It said it didn't find any infected files. I'm not sure if this is the Log you wanted. When I clicked 'save log' this is what it came up with.

One other thing...I have all these programs on my computer now because the process had me download them, do I need to keep them, should I keep them, or can I delete them? I also have Spybot S&D, Spyware Blaster, Microsoft AntiSpyware, McAfee Spyware, Ad-Aware SE Personal. Which one should I keep? Or keep all of them?

Also, should I change back my settings for Microsoft AntiSpyware and change back to 'Hide Protected Operating System Files'?

It would seem as though that took care of the problem but I will wait to hear back from you to see if that is the case. Thank you so much for your help in this matter. I really appreciate it.

Eventhough you had some hiccups during the fix, it seems like in the end we got what we wanted. I take it using killbox went fine?

Until we have a clean log, please keep all of the programs on your computer.
In the end I will give you a complete list of tips to keep the computer clean.

I want to make sure the log is clean so please post me a fresh log.

Yes using Killbox went fine. I have kept those programs on my computer and will until you tell me to take them off.
Which program do you want the log from? If you want the one from Ewido, that was blank and had nothing in the log sheet to copy and paste here. Let me know which program log you want and I will try to get it and post it back here.
Thanks again.

Can you rerun the advise.

Right click smitfraud.reg again as it is updated and click Save Target As. Save the file to your desktop.

Reboot to safe mode and redo the advise.

Let me know if this went ok.

Rerun all the advice from your first post? Where I used all those different programs?
And restart in safe mode after which action?

First, we will disable Antispyware as it with interfere with us cleaning your computer. You can enable it once we are done.

Open Microsoft AntiSpyware.
Click on Tools, Settings.
In the left pane, click on Real-time Protection.
Under Startup Options uncheck: Enable the Microsoft AntiSpyware Security Agents on startup (recommended).
Under Real-time spyware threat protection uncheck: Enable real-time spyware threat protection (recommended).
After you uncheck these, click on the Save button and close Microsoft AntiSpyware.
Right click on the Microsoft AntiSpyware icon on the taskbar and select Shutdown Microsoft AntiSpyware.

***

Please read these instructions carefully. You may want to print them. Copy the text to a Notepad file and save it to your desktop! We will need the file later.
Be sure to follow ALL instructions!

We need to make sure all hidden files are showing so please:* Click Start.
* Open My Computer.
* Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
* Select the View Tab.
* Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
* Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
* Click Yes to confirm.
* Click OK.
***

Reboot to safe mode

Open HijackThis
Go to ‘config’
Go to ‘misc tools’
Press ‘open process manager’
Select the process, press ‘kill process’ (and repeat this if necessary):
c:\bsw.exe
C:\WINDOWS\popuper.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\msole32.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\intmonp.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\msole32.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\shnlog.exe
C:\Program Files\Visual Networks\Visual IP InSight\SBC\IPClient.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\intmon.exe
Press 'back' and 'scan'.

***

Close all programs leaving only HijackThis running. Place a check against each of the following, making sure you get them all and not any others by mistake:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = about:blank
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = http://www.quicknavi...earch.php?qq=%1

Once it's done, log off and log on again. This will remove files that were in use during the scan.

***

Ddoubleclick the icon for Ewido on your desktop.
Let it update.
Then, let it do a full run, and copy the log. Past it to a blank Notepad file and save it to post here.
Than let it rerun. Save that log too.

***

Post me the ewido scans and a fresh log using HijackThis.

Here are the logs you asked for. I was out of town for the weekend, thus the delay. I did everything you asked me to do but when I re-ran hijackthis to get the file, the 'quicknavigate.com' files were still there. Am i doing something wrong? Let me know what to do next. Thank you.

AntiSpyWare seems to keep us from cleaning.

Open HijackThis and put a check to these entries:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = http://www.quicknavi...earch.php?qq=%1
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = http://www.quicknavi...earch.php?qq=%1
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,CustomizeSearch = http://www.quicknavi...earch.php?qq=%1
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = http://www.quicknavigate.com/

Press Fix checked and close HijackThis.

Microsoft AntiSpyWare is likely to prompt you for permission. Please grant permission to have this changed.

Reboot and post me a fresh log please.

I did as you told me but when I clicked 'fix checked', AntiSpyware didn't pop up and ask me to give it permission. Then i turned off the computer and here is the HijackThis log after it rebooted.

Thank you so much for your help. What should I do with all of the programs I've downloaded? Are there any that would be good to keep around in case this sort of thing happens again? Also, are there any essential functions I should undo such as hiding hidden folders again? Let me know.
