headset & vista problem

i have a headset connected to my laptop. when i dial out over our vpn to a remote, which then dials out to our customers, i am able to hear them but i sound all crackled and garbled to them. when i use the headset in my computer that is running xp pro it works perfectly. i have tried every setting i can find. i am not a computer wiz, but i can do the basics. even the IT guy is at a loss to fix it. it happens no matter which headset i am using. can anybody help? otherwise i am thinking of putting xp pro on the new laptop.
