Hi everyone,

I've been having problems with my wireless connection on my laptop (MacBook Pro, running Vista via BootCamp, as well as Mac Leopard OSX or something) on the Vista side. Every so often when I'm at home (and it seems to be only at home), my wireless connection drops completely and can't be regained without a restart. When I try to reconnect to it in "Connect or disconnect to a network", it tells me that it can't connect, and Diagnosing and Repairing doesn't help at all. It offers help on connecting to low-strength signal networks, but the signal strength is usually around 3-5/5, so it doesn't have anything to do with the problem. The thing is, it only happens to my laptop, but not any of my other wireless devices (gaming consoles, iPod), so I'd assume the issue isn't solely with the router.

Anyway, I can provide you with more specific and detailed information, but I don't really know what I should start off with, so I'll just tell you my router type: Linksys WRT54GS (old, but still decent). Just let me know. Thanks in advance.

Hey FyshStyx,

What type of security/encryption do you have setup on your home network? One of the most likely causes for random connectivity loss is due to outdated adapter drivers. Can you please make sure that your Wireless Adapter has the latest drivers installed.

Please follow the steps listed in this MS Article -- Wireless Connection Is Periodically Lost -- I'm mainly interested in Part 1: Disable IEEE 802.1X Authentication. See if the symptoms persist after making this change.

If you still get disconnected, the next time you lose your connection, please do the following:

Step 1 - Connectivity test:
  • Select Start
  • In the Start Search field type cmd -- right-click on the cmd program and choose Run as administrator
  • In the new command prompt window, please type the following commands (*Note: each ping will take approximately 10 seconds to complete; wait for the command prompt to return before you type the next one. Also, the single '>' and double '>>' are intentional; please type the commands exactly as they appear):
    • ipconfig /all > C:\results.txt
    • route print >> C:\results.txt
    • ping localhost >> C:\results.txt
    • ping google.com >> C:\results.txt
    • ping 209.85.171.100 >> C:\results.txt
  • Once the above commands have completed, navigate to your C: drive and open the text file results.txt -- please copy/paste the contents of this file into your next response.
Finally, try temporarily disabling encryption on your home network, and see if you still lose your connection.

To be honest, outdated drivers is the most likely cause here, in my opinion.

I followed Part 1 in that article, but it turned out that IEEE 802.1X Authentication was already disabled.

I hope you don't mind the codebox, I just thought it might be more considerate. About the home network encryption, it was already disabled. Terrible, I know, but our closest neighbors are quite a bit away from our house, and it's a Wireless G network, so the range is relatively short. If that justifies it at all.

Let's do some general clean up first. *Note: please only follow these steps if you do not use IPv6 for any applications (90% of home users do not need/use IPv6 at this time).

Step 1 - Disable IPv6:
  • Select Start
  • In the Start Search field type ncpa.cpl and press the Enter key on your keyboard.
  • In the new window, right-click on your Wireless Network Connection and select Properties.
  • In the This connection uses the following items section, remove the tick beside (i.e. disable) Internet Protocol Version 6 (TCP/IPv6) and then press OK.
Step 2 - Remove unnecessary tunnel adapters:
  • Press Start
  • In the Start Search field type devmgmt.msc and then press the ENTER key.
  • In the Device Manager, select View and then Show hidden devices
  • Expand Network adapters
  • In the list, you should see a whole bunch of isatap.{letters/numbers}
  • You have two options; you can either right-click on each, and select Disable, or select Uninstall. On all of my Vista machines, I have uninstalled them and never had an issue. You're more than welcome to simply disable them for now, however understand that they may still cause issues. My recommendation would be to uninstall them.
Step 3 - Disable the 6TO4 adapter:
  • Select Start
  • In the Start Search field type cmd -- right-click on the cmd program and choose Run as administrator
  • In the new command prompt window, type netsh in 6to4 set state disable
Step 4 - Reset your Winsock and TCP/IP settings:
  • Select Start
  • Type cmd in the Start Search field -- right-click on the cmd program and select Run as administrator
  • In the new command prompt window, type netsh int ipv4 reset resetlog.txt
  • Once the above command completes, type netsh winsock reset catalog
  • Restart your computer.
Once you computer reboots, please do the following steps:

Step 5 - When you have an active Internet connection, please post an ipconfig /all:
  • Select Start
  • In the Start Search field type cmd -- right-click on the cmd program and choose Run as administrator
  • In the new command prompt window, type ipconfig /all > C:\ipconfig.txt
  • Navigate to your C: drive and open the text file ipconfig.txt -- please copy/paste the contents of this file into your next response.
Step 6 - Check for errors/warnings in your Event Log:
  • Select Start
  • In the Start Search field type eventvwr and press the ENTER key
  • In the new window, expand Windows Logs and then select System -- this will display a list of all system events. Look for any errors and/or warnings (denoted by a red 'x' or a yellow '!'). If you find any, please post the relevant heading, along with the details inside by double clicking on the error/warning, and then copy/pasting the information from within.
*Note: you'll mainly be looking for errors/warnings that occur around the time you lose your connection, however any and all errors are useful.
Let me know how these steps go, and if you still continue to experience a desync from your router.

Thanks,
- Dan

Also, about the Errors and Warnings in the Event Viewer, there were 2900 (Errors/Warnings) since I got the computer in September 08, so I'll just post the most recent event (a warning), although it happened about 15 minutes before the actual noticeable event (connection loss). If you want any of the subsequent Information events (as they seem to have relevant info too, just let me know).

Warning 3/1/2009 9:58:18 PM Tcpip 4226 None
TCP/IP has reached the security limit imposed on the number of concurrent TCP connect attempts.

If you could try posting a few of the DHCP and TCP/IP errors, that would be appreciated.

In the mean time, I'm going to suggest you setup a static IP, and see if the symptoms persist.

Step 1 - Create a batch file named static.bat:
Please do the following:
  • Select Start
  • In the Start Search field type notepad.exe and then press the ENTER key on your keyboard.
  • In the notepad window, please copy/paste all of the text in the CODE box below:
netsh interface ip set address "Wireless Network Connection" static 192.168.1.115 255.255.255.0 192.168.1.1 1
netsh interface ip set dns "Wireless Network Connection" static 64.59.160.13
netsh interface ip add dns "Wireless Network Connection" 64.59.160.15
  • Select File, then click Save As...
    • Set its save location to your desktop.
    • Set its File name to static.bat
    • Set its Save as type to All Files
  • Press the Save button to save it to your desktop.
*Note: it is important that you change the Save as type, else you will simply save a text document, which will not achieve the same results.
Step 2 - Create a batch file named dhcp.bat:
Please do the following:
  • Select Start
  • In the Start Search field type notepad.exe and then press the ENTER key on your keyboard.
  • In the notepad window, please copy/paste all of the text in the CODE box below:
netsh interface ip set address "Wireless Network Connection" dhcp
netsh interface ip set dns "Wireless Network Connection" dhcp
  • Select File, then click Save As...
    • Set its save location to your desktop.
    • Set its File name to dhcp.bat
    • Set its Save as type to All Files
  • Press the Save button to save it to your desktop.
*Note: it is important that you change the Save as type, else you will simply save a text document, which will not achieve the same results.
Step 3 - Setting the static IP:
Once you have the two batch (.bat) files saved to your desktop, please right-click on the static.bat batch file, and select Run as administrator. A DOS window will open temporarily, then close. This will assign your machine a static IP; please continue browsing as normal and see if the issue still occurs.

If, for whatever reason, you need to remove the Static IP and return to normal, simply right-click on the dhcp.bat batch file, and select Run as administrator. A DOS window will open temporarily, then close. This will return your machine to auto-configuration.

Let me know if the issue still occurs -- also, please post some of those DHCP and TCP/IP errors.

Thanks,
- Dan

Okay I set up a static IP, but the problem is still there.

Here are the most recent errors and warnings (since I last posted them) in chronological order:

Here are two of the DHCP errors (there were tons more, but the only differences I saw were the dates and times they occured, and the IP address[of which there were only two, and they're both here]):
Error 11/1/2008 9:07:53 PM Dhcp-Client 1002 None
The IP address lease 192.168.1.102 for the Network Card with network address 00231218C4DE has been denied by the DHCP server 192.168.1.1 (The DHCP Server sent a DHCPNACK message).

Error 2/13/2009 3:31:14 PM Dhcp-Client 1002 None

Here are two DHCP warning (only two types):
Warning 2/13/2009 3:31:14 PM Dhcp-Client 1003 None
The description for Event ID 1003 from source Microsoft-Windows-Dhcp-Client cannot be found. Either the component that raises this event is not installed on your local computer or the installation is corrupted. You can install or repair the component on the local computer.

If the event originated on another computer, the display information had to be saved with the event.

The following information was included with the event:

00231218C4DE
%%2163146757

The locale specific resource for the desired message is not present

Warning 2/13/2009 7:38:47 PM Dhcp-Client 1003 None
Your computer was not able to renew its address from the network (from the DHCP Server) for the Network Card with network address 00231218C4DE. The following error occurred:
The semaphore timeout period has expired.. Your computer will continue to try and obtain an address on its own from the network address (DHCP) server.

I couldn't find any TCP/IP errors, but here is the only type of TCP/IP warning I could find (there were lots, but again the only difference was the log time):

Warning 2/28/2009 6:27:20 PM Tcpip 4226 None
TCP/IP has reached the security limit imposed on the number of concurrent TCP connect attempts.

Thanks for posting the errors; I'll do some research and get back to you.

In the mean time, the next time you lose your connection, can you please try the following.

Step 1 - Export your wireless settings:
  • Select Start
  • In the Start Search field type cmd -- right-click on the cmd program and choose Run as administrator
  • In the new command prompt window, type netsh wlan show all > C:\results.txt
  • Navigate to your C: drive and open the text file results.txt -- please copy/paste the contents of this file into your next response.
Step 2 - Attempt to release and renew your IP:
  • Select Start
  • In the Start Search field type cmd -- right-click on the cmd program and choose Run as administrator
  • In the new command prompt window, please type the following commands:
*Note: Wait for your connection to release before attempting to renew it; this may take a few seconds.
    • ipconfig /release
    • ipconfig /renew
  • If either command produces an error, please post the error message.
Also, when did this issue start happening? Can you remember anything relevant occurring around the same time (i.e. OS updates, new software, etc.)? How frequently do you get disconnected?

Please try running your computer in a clean boot state and see if the issue persists.

Step 3: Start your machine in a clean boot state:
  • Select Start
  • In the Start Search field type msconfig and press the enter key.
  • In the new window, select the General tab and then select Selective Startup.
  • Click to clear the Load Startup Items check box.
  • Verify that Load System Services and Use original boot configuration are checked.
  • Click the Services tab.
  • Click to select the Hide All Microsoft Services check box.
  • Click Disable All, and then click OK.
  • When you are prompted, click Restart to restart the computer.
When the computer reboots, do you still experience the disconnects?
*Note: To return Windows to a normal startup mode, please do the following:
  • Select Start, and then click Run.
  • Type msconfig, and then click OK.
  • Click the General tab, click Normal Startup - load all device drivers and services, and then click OK. When you are prompted, click Restart to restart the computer.

And here are the IP release and renewal command results (I did it when it was disconnected, but it gave me this):

C:\Windows\system32>ipconfig /releaseWindows IP ConfigurationNo operation can be performed on Local Area Connection while it has its media disconnected. No operation can be performed on Bluetooth Network Connection while it has its media disconnected. No operation can be performed on Wireless Network Connection while it has its media disconnected.C:\Windows\system32>ipconfig /renewWindows IP ConfigurationNo operation can be performed on Local Area Connection while it has its media disconnected. No operation can be performed on Bluetooth Network Connection while it has its media disconnected. No operation can be performed on Wireless Network Connection while it has its media disconnected.

Now, I tried Step 3, and it didn’t work, because my laptop can’t connect to the wireless at all, and neither can my dad’s laptop, or my ancient Toshiba Satellite. I’m actually posting this now because I’ve connected an Ethernet cable from my laptop directly to the router, since the wireless connection isn’t working (and I can still attempt to connect wirelessly, but to no avail).

I’m thinking now that it’s almost completely an issue with the router; however, I made a thread here as well a few days ago, and it was because a wireless issue caused the blue screen on my own computer. I’m not sure if the blue screen issue has anything to do with the router’s problem, or if it’s something separate, but I thought I’d let you know, now that it seems to have more relevance.

Since I connected via Ethernet, I haven’t done Step 3, but I retried IP releasing and renewing, and I got this:

About when the issue started happening....well, the first warnings and errors in the Event Viewer show it as around October 16th, but I’m not sure if that’s because it’s exactly when the issue started, or if it’s shown as the 16th because that is the oldest non-deleted entry in Event Viewer (I don’t know how EV handles old event logs). I can’t really remember applying any major changes to my computer around that time, sorry. As for the frequency...it's pretty random. The day I posted this thread it was disconnecting me every hour or so, and could only be reconnected via a restart (as is usually the case), so that was a very fun night for me, especially since I was trying to do research for an essay. Other times though, it can go for a few weeks without ever disconnecting.

So yeah, that's the story so far.

Are you using third party software to handle your wireless connection? If not, the next time you start in a clean boot state, goto Start --> type services.msc and press the ENTER key --> Scroll down to WLAN Autoconfig (it'll be at the bottom), right-click and select Properties --> Click Start and then click OK. Does this allow the service to be started?

Your netsh logs and the ipconfig errors seem to indicate that it is your Network Adapter that is losing the connection, not your router.

Does your dad also lose his connection randomly? Or is it only you? Make sure that your adapter isn't having issues, please re-install it.

Step 1 - Re-install your network adapter:
Please do the following -- *Note: You may need your Network adapter drivers CD in order to complete these steps.
  • Press Start
  • In the Start Search field type devmgmt.msc and then press the ENTER key.
  • In the Device Manager, expand Network adapters
  • Under Network adapters, right-click your network adapter and select Uninstall.
  • Restart your computer; upon reboot, Windows will detect New Hardware and ask you to install your network adapter; please proceed to do so.
Ensure your adapter has the latest drivers installed.

Some times these errors can be misleading; it is possible that your router is simply faulty, however that would mean that your dad should be getting disconnects also; is he?

Try logging into your router and changing the channel it broadcasts on. If it's set at 6, try 11, then 1.

[EDIT]The below statement isn't necessarily true -- what is the name (SSID) of your network? [/EDIT]

When you posted that netsh log, although you didn't have a connection, your router was still visible with a reasonable signal (82%). This is why I'm wondering if it's not simply your network adapter. Just seems odd. But, if it's happening to your dad as well then it's more likely to be a router issue.

[EDIT] Posted correct instructions for Windows Vista.

Step 1 - Enable wireless tracing (Windows Vista):
  • Select Start
  • In the Start Search field type cmd -- right-click on the cmd program and choose Run as administrator
  • In the new command prompt window, type netsh wlan set tra persistent
  • Restart your computer. Upon reboot, continue using your wireless connection as you normally do; however, when you lose your connection, continue with the following steps -- *Note: it is important that you note down the time that lose your connection, as I will need this information in order to identify where in the log to look -- please post the exact time (Hours, minutes, day, month).
  • Navigate to %WINDIR%\tracing\wireless where %WINDIR% is the directory that you installed Windows (i.e. C:\Windows -- although you can manually enter %WINDIR%\tracing\wireless into your explorer's address bar).
  • In this folder, you should see three files: OneX, Wlan and Msmsec -- ZIP these files and then Attach the ZIP file to your next response, as they are quite lengthy; do not simply post them.
  • Once you have attached these files, repeat steps 1 and 2, and in the Command prompt window, type netsh wlan set tra no
Thanks,
- Dan

Thanks Dan, I'll be sure to do that the next time it happens.

I'm just posting this so you know I haven't stopped paying attention to this.

Hi Dan, my connection dropped again, at 12:54 AM (but reconnected on its own at 12:56, not sure if this changes things), so I have the files in a .zip, and I followed step 7 of your instructions.
