trouble installing SP1 would like to know how to re-load Vista without CD

I tried doing all system updates proir to attempt at SP1, laptop Sony Vaio usually locks up, sometimes error 0x80070002, when attempting C windows system32 I'm denied access - not sure how to get around that while attempting ren SoftwareDistribution method i get access denied
