My computer will not connect to the internet

Well on my computer in my other room, I was using it this morning and it was working fine. This afternoon, it wont connect to the internet. I have Firefox and Internet Explorer. Neither one will work.

I tried unplugging my router and waiting to plug back in. I tried system restoring it to an earlier date. I tried restarting the computer in general. Nothing will work. I can't think of what else to do.

If you know what is wrong please help.

Hey zackthewack -- welcome to G2G :)

Question: Are you connecting via wireless, or a wired (Ethernet) connection?

Please try the following steps -- you will need some form of removable media (i.e. a USB chip) in order to transfer these files to post them.

Step 1 - Connectivity test:
  • Select Start
  • In the Start Search field type cmd -- right-click on the cmd program and choose Run as administrator
  • In the new command prompt window, please type the following commands (*Note: each ping will take approximately 10 seconds to complete; wait for the command prompt to return before you type the next one. Also, the single '>' and double '>>' are intentional; please type the commands exactly as they appear):
    • ipconfig /all > C:\results.txt
    • route print >> C:\results.txt
    • ping localhost >> C:\results.txt
    • ping google.com >> C:\results.txt
    • ping 209.85.171.100 >> C:\results.txt
    • tasklist /svc >> C:\results.txt
  • Once the above commands have completed, navigate to your C: drive and open the text file results.txt -- please copy/paste the contents of this file into your next response.
Step 2 - Restart your machine in Safe Mode with Networking:
Please restart the problematic machine in Safe Mode with Networking and then see if you can get an Internet connection; can you?
*Note: You will not be able to use a wireless connection while in Safe Mode; please ensure all tests are performed with a wired (Ethernet) connection.

OK :)

Step1 - Check to ensure your adapter is working properly:
  • Press Start
  • Select Run
  • Type devmgmt.msc and press OK
  • In the new window, please expand Network Adapters
  • Are there any devices under the network adapters that have either a red 'x' or a yellow '!'?
Step 2 - Reset your Winsock and TCP/IP settings:
  • Click Start, select Run, type cmd and press OK
  • In the new command prompt window, type netsh int ip reset reset.log
  • Once the above command completes, type netsh winsock reset catalog
  • Restart your computer and attempt to connect to the Internet; can you?
If you still cannot connect, please do the following..

Step 3 - Restart your machine in Safe Mode with Networking:
Please restart the problematic machine in Safe Mode with Networking and then see if you can get an Internet connection; can you?
*Note: You will not be able to use a wireless connection while in Safe Mode; please ensure all tests are performed with a wired (Ethernet) connection.

I did step 1 and there were no red "x" or yellow "!".

After step 2 I restarted my computer and I still could not connect to the internet.

I then tried going into Safe Mode with Networking and that also failed to work.

This was all done with an Ethernet cord plugged in as well. Another that may help you with solving the problem is that when my Ethernet cord is plugged into my router, it flashes. None of my other ones do that. I didn't think it was because there were to many plugged in though. All 4 slots are filled. I tried switching them around in the different holes but that still got me no where. I don't know if it is something wrong with the cord or what. I just know the little light that is supposed to stay on when you plug in the ethernet cord to the router, is blinking. Like a slow paced blink. When it is plugged into the computer it does not do that and none of my other computers Ethernet cords blink either.

Hey Zack,

Have you tried switching the Ethernet cable connecting your problematic machine with one of the other Ethernet cables and seeing if (a) the problematic machine can connect with the new cable and (b) whether your other machines can connect with the problematic machines Ethernet cable?

That would be my first test to see if it's your Ethernet cable causing the issue.

That's what I was thinking of doing but I wanted to know if there was other things I could do first :)



I just changed the Ethernet cable from the computer the computer that wont work to the computer I'm on right now. It is still connected to the internet as I'm typing this. I'm guessing it is the computer.

Sounds like a reasonable assumption.

Step 1 - Re-install your network adapter:
Please do the following -- *Note: You may need your Network adapter drivers CD in order to complete these steps.
  • Click Start, select Run, type devmgmt.msc and press OK
  • In the Device Manager, expand Network adapters
  • Under Network adapters, right-click your network adapter and select Uninstall.
  • Restart your computer; upon reboot, Windows will detect New Hardware and ask you to install your network adapter; please proceed to do so.
If you still can't get an Internet connection, please follow Step 2.

Step 2 - Post an ipconfig from a working computer:
On one of your machines that has a working connection, please do the following:
  • Click Start, select Run, type cmd and press OK
  • In the new command prompt window, type ipconfig /all > C:\ipconfig.txt
  • Navigate to your C: drive and open the text file ipconfig.txt -- please copy/paste the contents of this file into your next response.

Thanks Zack. Let's try "force" a connection by setting up a static IP. Please do the following:

Step 1 - Configure a Static IP:
Goto Start --> Programs --> Accessories --> Communications --> Network Connections --> Right click on your Local Area Connection --> Select Properties --> Click on Internet Protocl (TCP/IP) once and press the Properties button --> Select the option Use the following IP Address: --> Enter in the following details:
  • IP Address: 192.168.1.111
  • Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
  • Default Gateway: 192.168.1.1
Select Use the following DNS Servers --> Enter in two DNS Servers:
  • Preferred DNS Server: 192.168.1.1
  • Alternate DNS Server: <leave blank>
Press OK.

Once you have the Static IP in place, please do the following ping tests.

Step 2 - Ping tests:
  • Press Start
  • Select Run
  • Type cmd and press OK
  • In the new command prompt window, please type the following commands (*Note: each ping will take approximately 10 seconds to complete; wait for the command prompt to return before you type the next one. Also, the single '>' and double '>>' are intentional; please type the commands exactly as they appear):
    • ping 192.168.1.1 > C:\results.txt
    • ping 127.0.0.1 >> C:\results.txt
    • ping google.com >> C:\results.txt
    • ping 209.85.171.100 >> C:\results.txt
  • Once the above commands have completed, navigate to your C: drive and open the text file results.txt -- please copy/paste the contents of this file into your next response.

This message is for DAN and any of the other techs reading this.

DAN, I was having trouble getting on the Internet, just as many of the others who have posted this same problem. I could dial up ok, but every time I attempted to access the Internet, I received a message 'page not found' or 'done' but my homepage was not able to load.

Sometime ago, I recall the firewall program ZoneAlarm somehow was preventing people from accessing the Internet. If I remember correctly, there was a 'KB' submitted by Microsoft.com for a fix.

Well, anyway, this morning I had the idea to uninstall ZoneAlarm from my system to see if that would help. It was the ZoneAlarm free addition. I forgot to note the version.

And maybe because I kept putting off updating ZoneAlarm that could have been the cause of my problem of not being able to get on the Internet.

Bottom line: I am online with the machine I have had this trouble and posted as much on this site. So, it may be a good idea to possibly see if the person you are working with has ZoneAlarm (free version). And whether they have updated or not, or free edition or not, uninstalling ZoneAlarm may be the ticket.

Please pass this information forward to other Techs who are helping people with this problem. Maybe uninstalling Zonealarm and I can just happen to get on the Internet was a fluke, some kind of coincidence. But I don't think so, given ZoneAlarm's history.

Zone Alarm (free addition) is on my laptop also. And don't you know it just started with the same problem this morning of not enabling me Internet access. It is almost as though the program has a clock in it that will eventually render the computer unable to access the Internet.

I will uninstall Zonealarm from it also and let you know the results.

I will come back here in a day or so and let you know if I am still able to get online with both machines.

For those who are having this problem and the Tech agrees for you to uninstall ZoneAlarm, please come back here and let everyone know doing so has resulted in you also being able to get online.

I certainly hope this will be the case for you, as it has been for me. :)

Gosh! I hope I don't get off here and can't access the Internet again.

Well, I am back on and no problems. :) I am a happy man!

And that 633 error message I was getting? It is gone.

The last thing I want to say is, it wouldn't surprise me if ZoneAlarm has a fix for this issue on their site.

Hi Dan, ive been reading the thread cause i have a similar problem. Im running xp on my desktop and it wount connect to the internet via ethernet cable which is how i want to connect it. ive gone to 2 other computers in the house and both have Realtek as the connecting device and both show it under LAN or highspeed internet. my desktop however doesnt show LAN or highspeed internet but it does have that 1394 icon. ive tried everything in the thread you suggested but ran into problems. my desktop doesnt recognize me as the admin even though im the only one whoes on the computer and did the build and install myself. also when i try to create a new connection it never shows up. I switch the etehrnet cord to another computer to see if it was defective but its not. the problem lies with in the PC somewhere and i dont know how to fix it.

Any help would be greatly appreciated,

I was able to gain internet connection when I unplugged my pc from the router and plugged it into my laptop. Not sure if this is a setting problem or hardware issue. My last posting was the last test I did, anyone have any ideas?
