Hi everyone,

it's great that there's a site that helps unlearned people like myself... ;)

I have a problem with this "Vroomsearch.com" annoyance that attaches itself as my homepage and seems to slow down my computer. I dl HiJack This and followed the suggestions for removal from somebody else's log- but to no avail. Please help me before I take a boomstick to my monitor! :tazz:

My HiJack This log reads the following:

Hi Tylenol

I notice that you have joined Geek U.

With your new found knowledge of reading the tutorials, do you want to try your own fix?

If you want you can ask as many questions as you like.

Or if you would prefer i will reply to you as if you were just another user.

Regards,

Hi Usetobe,

Sure, I'd love to try my own fix, but here's the problem- I just tried out my HJT log#1 for underclassmen and messed THAT up. I will try regardless and if my performance is laughable, then please stop me (I really don't want to waste your time, I'm sure you're busy).

Anyway, I'd love to learn how to do this properly.

Here goes!... ;)

You may wish to print out a copy of these instructions to follow while you complete this procedure.

Please save Hijack This in a permanent folder (i.e. C:\HJT). This ensures backups are saved and accessible.

Please go offline, close all browsers and any open Windows, making sure that only HijackThis is open. Scan and when it finishes, put an X in the boxes, only next to these following items, then click fix checked.

Hi tylenol,

Considering how long you have been at Geek U, it is a resonable first attempt.

What we need to do it make it as easy as possible on yourself and the poster

I'll go through the entries that you have indicated first that you do not have to remove
then the one's you have missed.

And then give you several other pointers. You will soon find that Google is your friend in checking logs.

now onto the one's you marked up that do not need to go.

O2 - BHO: REALBAR - {4E7BD74F-2B8D-469E-C0FF-FD60B590A87D} - C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\Real\Toolbar\realbar.dll
O3 - Toolbar: REALBAR - {4E7BD74F-2B8D-469E-C0FF-FD60B590A87D} - C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\Real\Toolbar\realbar.dll

Both are open to debate but do not pose any significant harm.

The first 2 04's you mention are both legitimate. The first relates to Quick access to the control panel via a System Tray icon for graphics based upon the Intel chipsets.

The 2nd one Installed by the Intel 810 and 815 chipset graphic drivers. If you want the Ctrl Alt F12 or similar keypresses to access Intel's customised graphics properties, you need it, otherwise not. Can be disabled via Control Panel -> Display Properties

20 - Winlogon Notify: NavLogon - C:\WINDOWS\System32\NavLogon.dll <<--- this one OK Relates to Norton

Now onto the one's you missed

R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,CustomizeSearch = ,---LEFT OVER CLUTTER
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Windows Media Player] wmediaplayer.exe ,---agobot w32 worm
O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [Windows Media Player] wmediaplayer.exe <-- Agobot W32 worm

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [SecretSmileys] C:\PROGRA~1\SECRET~1\ss.exe <-----adware

You also have an optional resource hog

O4 - Global Startup: Microsoft Office.lnk = C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office10\OSA.EXE <<--- All componants of office available via start/programs...in geek u recommend the optional, but in practice let it stay unless the poster asks how to speed up slow machine or any other pointers you could suggest.

So all in all not a bad effort.

One thing to look at in the running services on the first part of the HJT log. If there are any in there that are susp or are also to be deleted with HJT, they either need stopping via Ctrl/Alt/Delete...processes end task ie in your case.....

C:\WINDOWS\system32\igfxpers.exe
C:\PROGRA~1\SECRET~1\secretsmiles.exe

or Run HJT in SAFE MODE.

It's good practice to get a virus scan as one of the first things

Use Ad-aware and Spybot to find and clear out other nasties that they can find and the latest new program that you will find very very good is ewido.

As well as deleting the entries, it's also good practice to get them to run Cleanup to clear out temp files junk etc.

Ewido and cleanup are best used in safe mode at the end of procedures and therefore are best downloaded at the beginning.

So this is how i would handle it.

Hi Tylenol,

Welcome to Geeks2GO

Please print out these instructions to make it easy to follow and to have access to them when you have to reboot your pc. Please read through them prior to commencing to do anything and if there is anything that you are unsure of, or do not understand, please contact me first for assistance.

I would like you to carry out the following free on-line virus scan and follow their instructions on removal of anything that it may find.

Kaspersky Enter your name, for company type anything you like and enter your email address in the relevant boxes. Allow it to fix any thing it finds.

Next please download the following two programs. Install them and update them both. Then run each one and have them fix anything that they may find.

Spybot Search and Destroy 1.3

Ad-aware S E 1.5

Download the following free 14 day trial program.

Ewido
Install it and follow the instructions to update it, then close it down.

Download Cleanup from HERE/URL], but do not run it yet.

Reboot into SAFE MODE by tapping on the F8 key whilst your PC starts up, select SAFE MODE

Open up HJT and rescan and Place a check against each of the following, making sure you get them all and not any others by mistake. Some of them might not be there as they will have been removed in previous stages of the sequence. This is normal so do not be alarmed

Ensure no windows are open apart from HJT and click FIX CHECKED.

Set PC to show hidden files (Click link below if you do not know how

[url="http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/helpandsupport/learnmore/tips/hiddenfiles.mspx"]Show hidden files

Using Windows Explorer locate and delete the following files/folders if present

C:\WINDOWS\system32\siq.dll
wmediaplayer.exe <<<<------- Carry out a search for this one

C:\Program Files\Ebates_MoeMoneyMaker\<<<----entire folder

Now click on the ewido icon. Once it is ready click on the Scanner button, Select drives if you have more than one and then start.

grab a cup of coffee, sandwiches, book as this may take some time. Once the first problem is detected ensure you tick the box for all (bottom left) and allow it to continue.

At the end of the scan, it may ask if you would like to delete anything found in archive or zipped files, OK that request, then click on save report. SAVE to the default location, it will then generate a text file. Copy that to post in this thread.

Now use the Cleanup program to clear out temp files, junk etc.

Reboot your PC normally.

Carry out another HJT scan and post the log back here, together with the ewido report, so we can sort out any remnants

Hi tylenol,

Just 1 entry i didn't put in the last one, (just goes to show that you need to concentrate :tazz: ). you did raise it and i didn't follow up on it.

Rescan with HJT, Check the following,

O8 - Extra context menu item: &Search the Web - C:\WINDOWS\Web\Ers_src.htm <<---- hijacks to search-aide.com

Ensure no windows open other than HJT and click fix checked.

After that you are clear to go.

From your log, I see nothing in the ways of trojans, nor any evil entities attempting to possess your computer, except for Windows but it's too late for that one. ;)

Congratulations your log now appears to be clean. ;)

Here are some tips, to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future, I strongly recommend installing the following applications:

Detect and Remove Programs:
  • How to use Ad-Aware to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Ad-Aware.
  • How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.
Prevention Programs:
  • Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
  • Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
  • IE/Spyad <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
  • Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
Other necessary Programs:
  • AntiVirus Program<= An AntiVirus program is a must! Whether it is a free version like AVG or Anti-Vir, or a shareware version like Norton or Kapersky, this is a must have.
  • Firewall<= A firewall is definatley a must have. Two good free versions are Sygate and ZoneLabs.
  • More Secure Browser<= Internet Explorer is not the most secure and best browser. There are safer and better alternatives available. I recommend Firefox, however Opera and SlimBrowsers are good as well.
And also see TonyKlein's good advice
So how did I get infected in the first place? and AntiSpyware Net's spyware article: Spyware, Adware, Malware: What it is, how it got on my computer, how to get rid of it, and how to prevent it.
