I've used CCleaner multiple times.

Is the Disk Cleanup Utility similar?

It might be where it concerns some specific hidden Windows folders.

Pieter,

I followed the directions in your last post and deleted everything the Disk Utility Cleanup identified. I also deleted all but the last Restore Point using DUC.

Downloader.Small.33.G seems to be gone. Unfortunately, I still cannot run Search in Windows or turn off the System Restore.

The malware seems to be gone, but Mr. Gates' product isn't working quite right.

Suggestions?

Thanks for your help.

A few pointers for the Search I found a while back:

http://support.micro...kb;en-us;222029

http://support.micro...kb;en-us;319949

Click Start > RUN > Type or copy&paste these commands (one by one followed by clicking OK)

regsvr32 urlmon.dll
regsvr32 jscript.dll
regsvr32 wshom.ocx

Each should prompt a confirmation box saying it has been successful.

Let me know if it helps and check if it also solves tyhe System Restore problem.

I ran

regsvr32 urlmon.dll
regsvr32 jscript.dll
regsvr32 wshom.ocx

and received confirmation on all three. "Search" still didn't work.

I followed the directions at "http://support.micro...b;en-us;222029", and modified the Registry. It didn't help, so I changed it back.

The second link suggested getting SP 1, but I've already got it. When I clicked on the "Available Updates" button, it wanted to install SP 2, but I thought I would check with you first.

What do you think?

Thanks for your help.

Getting all available updates is certainly something that is worth a try.

Especially installing IE SP2 might cure your problem.
