Images not downloading

I find any application downloading images (Image Search on Google, Ask.com, etc) with any browser (IE, Firefox, Opera) - after the first few images, fails to download more - hangs interminably, or says 'Done' while displaying blank squares.

Today I have joined Facebook - and wanted to see my son's photos - he is traveling in the Far East. Same thing here - after the first dozen or so, just blank squares.

So it is hard to pin it down to any particular browser, or application. Mebbe I have got some system setting wrong - but this is a new machine (few weeks old) - and I am not aware of having touched anything that might affect it. I did increase the cache size on Google, thinking this might have a bearing.
