I'm trying to play Call of Duty - World at War and I keep getting a 'This disc is unreadable' error. The strange thing is, I can play the game fine when i'm not signed in to xbox live but as soon as I sign in and apply the update I get the error again. Also, the game worked fine yesterday and I haven't even taken the disc out of the 360, it just started happening suddenly today.

Well I've had this problem before. I've always called in to xbox customer support and asked them why and had to explain a couple of timnes that it is not the disc that it is the updatre causeing this. many times they will say your console needs to be wiped of its download cache. In reality what there telling you is that they accidentaly had an attached file with something you downloaded and need it deleted. of course they wont tell you this. Yes this may be a fight with them to get them to realize that its not the disc. so id suggest unhooking the hard drive and putting the game in and running it and then shutting off the console and re attaching the hard drive. agian run the game with the update and if thisd does not work then id suggest calling 1-800-4my-xbox and talking to customer service.

you may wish to wipe game updates. Try these in order and after each see if CoD WaW works for you. This will not wipe save games :)

How To Clear Any Failed System Updates:
  • With the console off, press and hold the sync button on the front of the console. This button is on the side of the memory card slots closer to the power button.
  • While holding the sync button, simultaneously press the power button to turn on the console.
  • Continue to hold the sync button until the Xbox has booted up completely.
  • During the boot process the console should clear any failed updates.

How To Clear Installed Game Updates:

Go to the System Settings menu. In the New Xbox Experience dashboard, go to My Xbox, scroll all the way to the right, press A on System Settings.
Go to Memory and press A
Press Y on your primary storage device. For most consoles this is your hard drive -- if you do not have a hard drive, it will be your memory unit.
Press X, X, Left Bumper, Right Bumper, X, X
A message will appear: Do you want to perform maintenance on your Xbox 360 storage devices?
Press A on Yes.
