Hi,

I keep getting an access denied error when trying to turn automatic updates on my computer.
I have tried running services.msc and I get access denied from there as well. Rorschach112 from malware forum has got rid of all malware on my computer but he cannot fix this problem. I tried wufix as well but that did nothing. please help.

yeah i mean im able to get into everything but once i change a setting to automatic or enable, it says access denied once i have clicked the ok button.
when i go to automatic updates via control panel it opens and has the update settings already set to automatic. time everyday at 8am.
i have tried the two things i mentioned in my first post and now im stuck.
what would happen if i uninstalled windows and tried reinstalling?

If you are able to access services, by doing this.

Start, right click on My computer, Manage, (open + (left pane)) services and applications, double click on services

(What Rorschach112 was trying to do was, see which services were started when you boot your machine.)

You can't uninstall windows. If you mean reformat and reinstall, geekstogo, only recommends doing that as
a last effort, as you will have to reinstall all of your programs, and all of your data will be lost.

I did take a look at the Services, nothing stands out there. I'm looking into a few other possibilities. I'll be back in a bit.

Since Most techs use services.msc to help fix your machine lets start there.

Navigate to: C:\WINDOWS\system32 ,
Right click on services, click properties, click on the security tab.
Take a snapshot and send it with your next post.

try this...
first click on start...run...type in services.msc...make sure
* Automatic Updates
* Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS)
are both set to automatic AND STARTED

NO JOY


reregister Windows Update components To do this... follow these steps...

1. Click Start...click Run...type REGSVR32 WUAPI.DLL... press ENTER
2. When you receive the "DllRegisterServer in WUAPI.DLL succeeded" message, click OK
3. Type the following commands in the Open box, one after the other, and then press ENTER after each command:
REGSVR32 WUAUENG.DLL
REGSVR32 WUAUENG1.DLL
REGSVR32 ATL.DLL
REGSVR32 WUCLTUI.DLL
REGSVR32 WUPS.DLL
REGSVR32 WUPS2.DLL
REGSVR32 WUWEB.DLL

We are most likely dealing with a corrupt permissions setting in the registry when did this start happening?

Looks like I found something that should work.

The steps that I am about to suggest involve modifying the registry. Modifying the registry can be dangerous so we will make a backup of the registry first.
Modification of the registry can be EXTREMELY dangerous if you do not know exactly what you are doing so follow the steps that are listed below EXACTLY. if you cannot preform some of these steps or if you have ANY questions please ask BEFORE proceeding.

Backing Up Your Registry

• Go Here and download ERUNT
  (ERUNT (Emergency Recovery Utility NT) is a free program that allows you to keep a complete backup of your registry and restore it when needed.)
• Install ERUNT by following the prompts
  (use the default install settings but say no to the portion that asks you to add ERUNT to the start-up folder, if you like you can enable this option later)
• Start ERUNT
  (either by double clicking on the desktop icon or choosing to start the program at the end of the setup)
• Choose a location for the backup
  (the default location is C:\WINDOWS\ERDNT which is acceptable).
• Make sure that at least the first two check boxes are ticked
• Press OK
• Press YES to create the folder.

Registry Modifications

1.) First Click on start.
2.) In start search type in regedit.
3.) Open up regedit.
4.) Expand HKEY_CURRENT_USER
5.) Expand Software
6.) Expand Microsoft
7.) Expand Windows
8.) Expand CurrentVersion
9.) Expand Policies
10.) Expand WindowsUpdate
11.) Locate the value in the right pane called DisableWindowsUpdateAccess
12.) Double click this entry and change the value to 0 (zero) or right click it and select Delete.

If you do not see that entry do not do anything just post back saying you do not see that entry. If the entry is there and states 0 do not do anything just post back saying that the entry states 0.

no i cant see that file all i can see is Default - REG_SZ - no value set.
In system in policies i can see DisableRegistryTools and that value is already set to 0

You are having more than one problem, it is best if we handle them one at a time.
Please do this:

Since you already ran wufix (per the information on your malware post), and, it didn't fix the problem.
You don't need to do the second half of steps in post #8, those are a part of wufix .
Note: If the wufix.bat file didn't run, then do those steps.

when i right click services and go to properties there is no security tab just compatibility and summary.... also there were two services in system32. one being microsoft common console document and the other being a services and controller app. there microsoft common console program has only general and summary and the other one has general, summary and compatibility.
The steps in post 8 didnt work anyway either.. there was no box that came up for me to type those prompts in. I tried putting them through start and run but it said failed.

To answer your other question, I have had this problem since I loaded windows onto my computer?

Sorry about that, I'm so used to looking at them, I forgot to tell you which one.
The one we are looking at is the Microsoft Common Console document. It's the one that looks like a couple of gears. If you don't have a security tab it means you don't have administrator rights.

Are you logged on as administrator, or some other user?
