Internet Explorer icons missing on desktop and tray

Hi Geeks. Today a friend had no ie icon anywhere on her computer. I downloaded ie7 from it's home site, put it on a CD and installed it on her computer. Still no icon. Also, can't find the ie.exe file using explore function. Is this just ignorance on my part or is this a malware created problem?

C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer
Right click on iexplore.exe. Click Send to>Desktop
