Burning DL DVD fails with Nero 8 on Memorex 530L

I'm using Nero 8.3.13.0 on Win XP SP2, drive is a Memorex 530L. I can burn 1-2 DL DVDs successfully, but then the burn fails at the beginning with

Power calibration error
E: Memorex DVD+-RAM 530L v1
Could not perform start of Disc-at-once
Burn process failed at 8x (11,800 KB/s)

Thereafter it fails consistently with the same error.

Removing & cleaning Nero 8, then reinstalling gets me 1-2 more successful burns, then it happens again...

I read the previous reply from Julian Buss of Nero on 11/9/2008 to "Burning DVDs on internal Memorex DVD+RAM 530L v1", followed the instructions to remove conflicting drivers (it did find one from Pinnacle), cleaned registry, rebooted etc, but same result. Firmware is up to date (version 5M64).

The error log is quite long so I'm not including it for now.

Please help, I've tried everything I can think of.
