Hi, I see others have been having the same problem with IE being hijacked by quicknavigate.com, and I'm posting a new thread w/ my similar problem. I have not used the Lavasoft forum first, please let me know if I should start there.

I followed the directions I found in the post for Trojan Spy HTML Smitfraud by doing the following:

- removing Security IGuard, Virtual Maid, Search Maid
- ending processes popuper.exe and intmonp.exe
- running Killbox on the list of paths provided and rebooting in safe mode
- verifying the search maid, virtual maid, security iguard files were gone (had to delete system32\log files I think)
- rebooting into normal mode
- running Registrar Lite and deleting the system folder under policies
- restoring original hosts using Hoster
- running cleanup!

That's about it. haven't been able to run online scans as IE gets hijacked in the process. I've run Zonlab's Anonymizer Anti-Spyware and PestPatrol off the hard drive but this issue is not detected. Any help would be great. My log from Hijack This is below, thanks.

Welcome to GTG.

I think we can handle it here. :tazz:

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should 'not' have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

Go to My Computer->Tools/View->Folder Options->View tab and make sure that 'Show hidden files and folders' (or 'Show all files') is enabled. Also make sure that 'Display the contents of system folders' is checked. If you have Windows XP, the search feature is a little different. When you click on 'All files and folders' on the left pane, click on the 'More advanced options' at the bottom. Make sure that 'Search system folders', 'Search hidden files and folders', and 'Search subfolders' are checked.

For the options that you checked/enabled earlier, you may uncheck them after your log is clean. If we ask you to fix a program that you use or want to keep, please post back saying that (we don't know every program that exists, so we may tell you to delete a program that we think is bad to keep).

Download KillBox http://www.greyknigh...spy/KillBox.exe. Don't run it yet.

Reboot into Safe Mode by hitting the F8 key until menu shows up. In some systems, this may be the F5 key, so try that if F8 doesn't work. Make sure to close any open browsers. Uninstall the following via the Add/Remove Panel (Start->(Settings)->Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs) if they exist:

Security iGuard

Run a scan in HijackThis. Check each of the following and hit 'Fix checked' (after checking them) if they still exist (make sure not to miss any):

Run KillBox and check the box that says 'End Explorer Shell While Killing File'. Next click on 'Delete on Reboot'. For each of the following files below, check the box that says 'Unregister .dll Before Deleting' if it's not grayed out. Copy and paste each of the following into KillBox (hitting the X button for each file - choose NO when it asks if you want to reboot):

C:\WINDOWS\System32\shnlog.exe
C:\bsw.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\hp5330.tmp
C:\WINDOWS\System32\msmsgs.exe
C:\Program Files\Security iGuard\
c:\wp.exe
c:\wp.bmp

Reboot into Normal Mode run a new HijackThis scan. Save the log file and post it here.

Do you also have the wallpaper problem? If so, do the following also:

Right click on http://www.greyknigh...pairDesktop.reg and download that file. Double click on it and click on Yes when it asks you if you want to merge it into the registry. Once that's done, restart your computer.

Login as usual and now right click on your Desktop and go to Properties. Next go to Desktop tab->Customize Desktop button->Web tab. Uncheck everything listed there. Then delete all the entries listed except for 'My Current Home Page'. Click OK and OK

Thanks for the help. I want to make sure I can see all files necessary though. I do have XP, and I have Folder Options/view settings as:

hidden files and folders radio button set to show them

hide protected OS files (recommended) unchecked.

Just want to verify before moving forward. Will have to work on this Mon eve EST. Very troublesome problem. Thanks again.

No problem. Work on it when you have time. But the sooner, the better.

Yes, that's good. You may change those settings back after we are done.

Do the fix now.

Things are looking good! Excellent instructions. I blew away the wallpaper problem yesterday before you started helping me, so I was left w/ the IE hijacking problem. Seems good per the log, but I'll hold off doing anything until you've had a chance to review the HijackThis log below. Thank you!! :tazz:

Your log is clean.

Turn off system restore by right clicking on My Computer and go to Properties->System Restore and check the box for Turn off System Restore. Click Apply and then OK. Restart your computer and uncheck the same box to enable System Restore.

Make sure to get the latest updates for Windows and Internet Explorer at http://v5.windowsupd...t.aspx?ln=en-us.

To help prevent future spyware installations/infections, please read the Anti-Spyware Tutorial and use the tools provided.

Are there any problems now? If not, you should be set to go.

IE is looking good. Took care of the restore point as instructed. Will update IE and XP. I cleaned up the junk links that were added to my Favorites to be safe. The only problem now is Windows Messenger loading at boot up every time. Easy way to remove it?

Do you want to get rid of it for good? We can do that :tazz:

Go here and look at the first tip there. Enter that command and hit OK. It will remove Windows Messenger (not MSN, mistake there).

Any other problems/questions before I close this topic here?

I sure do want to get rid of it--wasn't there (or wasn't active) before. All set to close this topic out. I'll surf safer from here on. Not supposed to use the Net from this machine anyway (digital audio workstation). It's faster than my older one though ;-] Thank you greyknight17!! :tazz:
