windows media player skipping

when i play songs on windows media player it starts skipping.... i also noticed the same problem with another program i regularly use "vanbasco's karaoke player".... does anybody know what might be the cause of this. i have tried uninstalling and re-installing the two programs but am still getting the same skipping problem.
i installed vanbasco's karaoke player on a friends computer and it works fine.
i copied all settings from his player to mine and still i am getting skipping.

note - the files i play a midi files. although the problem happened when using mp3's on windows media.
