Hi pgb and welcome to the Geeks to Go Forums.

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order in which they are mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes.

My name is Trevuren and I will be helping you with your log.

A. Go to Geeks to Go
. Click on My Controls at the top right hand corner of the window. (make sure you have signed in first)
. In the left hand column, click "View Topics"
. If you click on the title of your post, you will be taken there

B. Also, while at the My Controls page, check the box to the right of your post and then scroll down.
.Where it says "unsubscribe" click the pull-down menu and select "immediate email notification"

C. Now for your infection:

1. Download and install Cleanup from: HERE. Extract it from the zip file to your desktop. Install the application accepting the defaults. DO NOT RUN IT UNTIL SO INSTRUCTED

2. Download and install a 14-day free version of Ewido Security Suite from:HERE. Update its definitions. DO NOT RUN UNTIL SO INSTRUCTED.

3. REBOOT into Safe MODE

How to use the F8 method to Start Your Computer in Safe Mode

*Restart the computer.
*as soon as BIOS is loaded begin tapping the F8 key until the Advanced Options menu appears.
*Use the arrow keys to select the Safe mode menu item
*press Enter.

4. Now let's do some work on your log:

First we need to make all files and folders VISIBLE:

Go to start>control panel>folder options>view (tab)
*choose to "show hidden files and folders,"
*uncheck the "hide protected operating system files" and the "hide extensions for know file types" boxes.
*Close the window with ok
*All hidden files will now be visible

Close all browser windows and RUN HijackThis.
. Click the SCAN button to produce a log.

Place a check mark beside each one of the following items:

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =
F2 - REG:system.ini: Shell=Explorer.exe C:\WINDOWS\Nail.exe
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {FDD3B846-8D59-4ffb-8758-209B6AD74ACC} - (no file)
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ffnjag] c:\windows\system32\zvrusg.exe
O16 - DPF: {03F998B2-0E00-11D3-A498-00104B6EB52E} - https://components.v...om_bedroom1.xml
O16 - DPF: {41F17733-B041-4099-A042-B518BB6A408C} - http://a1540.g.akama...meInstaller.exe
O23 - Service: System Startup Service (SvcProc) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\svcproc.exe

Now with all the items selected, delete them by clicking the FIX checked button. Close the HijackThis window.

Using Windows Explorer, locate the following files, and DELETE them (if they are present):

c:\windows\system32\zvrusg.exe
C:\WINDOWS\ltupvvqag.exe
C:\WINDOWS\Nail.exe
C:\WINDOWS\svcproc.exe

5) Go to start > run and type: sc delete SvcProc

6. Go to start > run and type: C:\Windows\Nail.exe /FullRemove

7. Locate Cleanup through START<<Program . Click the Cleanup Icon and when the program opens, click on the clean up button.

8. REBOOT into NORMAL MODE .

9. RUN and perform a FULL SCAN with EWIDO.

10. REBOOT your system.

11. Finally, run HijackThis and with all windows closed except for HJT, click SCAN, produce a LOG and POST it in this thread for review.

Regards,

Trevuren

Here it is - with the confession that I had used Ewido and Cleanup on my own after my first post. Hope it didn't muck things up.

Hi pjsuther,

Everything looks fine (I mean you didn't mess anything up :tazz: )

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order in which they are mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes.

Download Killbox here: http://www.downloads...org/KillBox.exe and put it on your desktop

Open Killbox

Check the following boxes:

Standard File Kill
End Explorer Shell While Killing file

Copy & paste the full path of the file below into the Killbox topmost box.

C:\WINDOWS\Nail.exe

With the full path to the file name in the topmost textbox, Click the Red X ...and for the confirmation message that will appear, you will need to click Yes

It may not be deleted

When you are through the list, use killbox to delete the files you were not able to delete as follows:

Open Killbox

Check the following boxes:

Delete on Reboot

With the full path to the file name in the topmost textbox. Click the Red X ...and for the confirmation message that will appear, you will need to click Yes

A second message will ask to Reboot now? you will need to click YES

Note: Killbox will let you know if the file does not exist.

After the reboot scan with hijackthis and fix the following if they are still listed

F2 - REG:system.ini: Shell=Explorer.exe C:\WINDOWS\Nail.exe
O16 - DPF: {15589FA1-C456-11CE-BF01-000000000000} - http://www.errornuke...erInstaller.exe

Reboot and Post a new hijackthis log

Regards,

Trevuren

I went back and deleted Nail.exe - this time it showed in its own folder on the C: drive called !Submit, but has not shown up in Windows.

How about the 'aurora' registry file?

Thanks.

Hi pjsuther,

Your log looks fine other than that registry entry.

1. Please doublecheck that Nail.exe is no longer present on your system

2. Then Run HJT, Scan and place a check beside:

F2 - REG:system.ini: Shell=Explorer.exe C:\WINDOWS\Nail.exe

Click on Fixed Checked and EXIT the program.

3. Reboot your system and produce a HJT log.

If the entry is still there, redo the Killbox step 3-5 times, it could just be a bit resistant.

Hi pjsuther,

I was just wondering how your system was running?
I would like a fresh HJT log to ensure that nothing is lurking and to enable me to complete the cleanup procedures.

It's running just fine! :tazz:

How about these two files in my registry? They came up after running Find-It's:

! REG.EXE VERSION 3.0

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Print\Monitors\ZepMon
Driver REG_SZ DrPMon.dll

! REG.EXE VERSION 3.0

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Control\Print\Monitors\ZepMon
Driver REG_SZ DrPMon.dll

Thanks again for your help.

Hi pjsuther,

Glad to hear that things are going well.

That DLL that you found with Find-it should be Killboxed if you can get to it. If not, get back to me and I'll get you a reg.fix for it.

These leftovers are all taken care of now with the updated fix.

Please keep me informed in any event. I'll leave the thread open until I hear from you.

Trevuren

Was able to delete the two dll's from the registry directly and they are staying gone.

I'd say it's a wrap.

Thanks again!

Hi pjsuther,

Congratulations, your new log shows that your SYSTEM IS CLEAN

There are a few things you must do once you are completely clean:

1. Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove bad files from the backup that Windows makes as no program is able to clean those files:

TO DISABLE SYSTEM RESTORE
1. Right-click "My Computer", and then left click "Properties".
2. Left click on "System Restore Tab"
3. Check box beside "Turn Off System Restore"
4. Left click on "Apply"

TO ENABLE SYSTEM RESTORE
1.Remove check mark from "Turn Off System Restore"
2.Click on "Apply"

2. Cleanup the leftovers. Download CleanUP! - Cleans temporary files from IE and Windows, empties the recycle bin and more. Great tool to help speed up your computer and knock out those nasties that like to reside in the temp folders.

3. Finally, Re-hide your System Files and Folders to prevent any future accidents.

Here are some tips to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future:

Make sure you keep your Windows OS current by visiting Windows update
regularly to download and install any critical updates and service packs. With out these you are leaving the backdoor open.

I strongly recommend installing the following applications:
  • Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
  • Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
  • How to use Ad-Aware to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Ad-Aware.
  • How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.
To protect yourself further:
  • IE/Spyad <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
  • Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
And also see TonyKlein's good advice
So how did I get infected in the first place? (My Favorite)

Regards,

Trevuren
