Word wont open

I have microsoft office xp professional. For the past few days word opens VERY slowly and when opening a word doc it just says "requesting virus scan". I x out of word and the ms screen comes up that it isnt responding and sends an error report.

Ideas and suggestions please?
:) I run a small biz out of my home and need word. I have antivirus, Ca and a firewall along with anti adware.

With Word closed, try renaming normal.dot to normal.old then start Word. Any difference?
