OK...

I have been trying to get my two friends to see each other.

XP System: Acer Aspire One, running XP Home SP2
Vista: HP DV9000 laptop, Vista Home Premium SP1

Initially, I shared folders on both systems and the Vista machine could see the shared folders, but the XP system could not see the Vista box. I saw simiar posts and I tried some of the suggestions posted by Dan.

Currently, neither can see each other, but the XP box shows up on the Network map available on Vista.

On the XP box, I ran cmd, then typed \\DEL_LAPTOP2. The network path was not found. I also entered the IP address on the start>run command line, same result.

Dan suggested I run the following on both systems:

ipconfig /all > C:\results.txt
net view >> C:\results.txt
net share >> C:\results.txt
nbtstat -n >> C:\results.txt

Info from the XP system:

In addition, he recommended the following:

On the XP machine do the following:
Press Start
Select Run
Type cmd and press OK
In the new command prompt window, please type the following commands (*Note: each ping will take approximately 10 seconds to complete; wait for the command prompt to return before you type the next one. Also, the single '>' and double '>>' are intentional; please type the commands exactly as they appear):
ping DEL_LAPTOP2 > C:\pings.txt
ping 192.168.1.105 >> C:\pings.txt

Info from pings suggestion:

Ping request could not find host DEL_LAPTOP2. Please check the name and try again.

Pinging 192.168.1.105 with 32 bytes of data:

Request timed out.

Ping statistics for 192.168.1.105:

Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 0, Lost = 4 (100% loss),

As you can see, by my fiddling around, both systems are blind to each other. However, DEL_NETBOOK still appears on the network map on the Vista system.

I am pretty fair at networking, but this is my first attempt to network XP/Vista together.

Any help (including from Dan) is welcome.

Thanks in advance... DW

Hey DW -- thanks for starting a thread :)

Normally, if you can not ping another machine on your network by IP or name (which you can't), then it's likely due to software interference (i.e. Firewalls). Please try disabling all firewalls and see if the issue persists.

Please do Step 1 on the Vista machine.

Step 1 - Generate a startup and uninstall list:
Please download HijackThis (if you do not already have it) and install it -- once it is installed, restart your computer. Once the computer starts up, can you please launch HijackThis and then select the option Open the Misc Tools section -- select Generate StartupList log. Save the startup list in a safe location. Now select the option Open Uninstall Manager and then click Save list -- save it to a safe location. Please post the contents of the startup list and the uninstall list in your next response.

Also, on the Vista machine, please ensure the following settings are in place:
  • Press Start
  • In the Start Search field type network and select Network and Sharing Center
  • In the new window, under the Sharing and Discovery section, can you please set the following status for each:
  • Network Discovery -- ON
  • File sharing -- ON
  • Public folder sharing -- ON
  • Printer sharing -- ON (if you want to actually share a printer, that is)
  • Password protected sharing -- OFF

Currently, neither can see each other, but the XP box shows up on the Network map available on Vista.

Please ensure you have a file/folder shared on the XP machine -- right-click on any Drive/Folder/File that you would like to share, and select Sharing and Security.... Ensure that Share this folder on the Network is enabled (ticked). Now try to access the XP machine from the Vista; can you?

Thanks,
- Dan

Dan;

As you will see in my startuplist log, I am using Norton360 v3.0 (both machines). I disabled the firewalls on both systems by using MSCONFIG. On the XP machine, I could see the Vista machine, but could not access it (network path not found).

Now for the log entries...

Can your Vista machine still not access the XP machine (did you try sharing a folder/file, or was it already shared)?

On your XP machine, please ensure the following services have been started:
  • Click Start, select Run, type services.msc and press OK
  • In this new window, please make sure all of the following services have a status of Started:
  • Computer Browser
  • DHCP Client
  • DNS Client
  • Network Connections
  • Network Location Awareness
  • Remote Procedure Call (RPC)
  • Server
  • TCP/IP Netbios helper
  • Workstation
As a side note, you may wish to completely shut down Norton for the time being, as it may still interfere (even with the firewall component disabled). You won't need to leave it disabled permanently, only disable it during testing periods (i.e. when you're running steps that I/another user suggest).

An easy way to rule out software interference would be to restart both machines in Safe Mode with Networking and then seeing if the issues persist.

SUCCESS!!!

The culprit ended up being Norton360 v3.0. I went into the firewall settings and allowed file sharing in the rules section. I can now see and access files on both systems. Now, if I could only improve the transfer rate. I am transferring a 700mb file, and am getting about 20KB /sec transfer rate. I guess that might be the limitation of 54mbps connection.

Any ideas, or do I have the transfer limiation right?

Thanks!

Fantastic :)

20KB/s seems very slow. What duplex setting are your NIC's set at?
  • Click Start, select Run, type ncpa.cpl and press OK
  • In the new window, right-click on your Network Connection and select Properties.
  • Press the Configure... button.
  • Select the Advanced tab.
  • Look for a Duplex setting (exact name will vary) -- what is it set at (i.e. 100 Mbps Full Duplex, 10 Mbps, Auto, etc.).
Check the setting on both machines, please.

Since my lastpost, I made some changes to the router (Linksys WRT100), expanded the channel, and a few other minor paramters. A subsequent test got me as much as 375KB/sec. I feel better, but may still use a crossover cable to get 100Mbps throughput.

Make sense?

375KB/sec is a more acceptable speed.

Yes, that makes perfect sense.

Before I unsubscribe from this topic, is there anything else you would like help with? Or have your issues been resolved?
