I am trying to help my elderly mother with her computer which is in another state. She says she has a black screen with a blinking _ in the upper left corner. She has turned the power off and back on and always gets the same thing. She is running Windows ME.

this happens sometimes when two device drivers are in conflict...did she install anything? (seems unlikely).

I'm not certain how I can help under these conditions (through an intermediary).

What I would likely do is rename the autoexec.bat and config.sys in dos (with a dos boot disk)

and edit the system.ini file using the EDIT dos command to remove third party devices (*.sys) files...but not ALL of them--just the ones I do not recognize
