i have now stopped using IE and switched to mozilla, is this a wise decision?
as for spyware programs, i've run spybot sd and anti-spyware blocker.
the blue background on my desktop is still there.
i've been reading through the numerous entries with the same problem as me, but i just can't figure out what to do. i just want to know what i should do now?
please help!!! :tazz:

Welcome to GTG.

That's a great move. :tazz: Firefox is much better than IE (at least for now).

Read the first link below in my signature and follow the instructions there. When ready, post the HijackThis log here.

ok, i've followed all the steps thusfar, and here's my hijack this log. one thing, i downloaded the sp1a windows update, but i think i remember seeing that i had sp2 before. is this going to be a problem? i also still have the blue security warning on my desktop. should this have normalized, or is this a seperate problem i need to wait and fix after i'm trojan-free?

Please don't give me the Ad-aware log unless it's requested. I don't need it. Just fix whatever Ad-aware found.

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should 'not' have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

Go to My Computer->Tools/View->Folder Options->View tab and make sure that 'Show hidden files and folders' (or 'Show all files') is enabled. Also make sure that 'Display the contents of system folders' is checked. If you have Windows XP, the search feature is a little different. When you click on 'All files and folders' on the left pane, click on the 'More advanced options' at the bottom. Make sure that 'Search system folders', 'Search hidden files and folders', and 'Search subfolders' are checked.

For the options that you checked/enabled earlier, you may uncheck them after your log is clean. If we ask you to fix a program that you use or want to keep, please post back saying that (we don't know every program that exists, so we may tell you to delete a program that we think is bad to keep).

Download KillBox http://www.greyknigh...spy/KillBox.exe. Don't run it yet.

Reboot into Safe Mode by hitting the F8 key until menu shows up. In some systems, this may be the F5 key, so try that if F8 doesn't work. Make sure to close any open browsers. Run a scan in HijackThis. Check each of the following and hit 'Fix checked' (after checking them) if they still exist (make sure not to miss any):

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page =
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = http://us3.hpwis.com/

Check and fix ALL the O18 entries here for Logitech - it's ok to fix. Best way to do this is hit the spacebar and then down arrow. Keep repeating this until all the O18 entries are checked.

O21 - SSODL: systemp - {9539F879-019E-472F-BEBA-32EAC70BC041} - systemp.dll (file missing)

Run KillBox and check the box that says 'End Explorer Shell While Killing File'. Next click on 'Delete on Reboot'. For each of the following files below, check the box that says 'Unregister .dll Before Deleting' if it's not grayed out. Copy and paste each of the following into KillBox (hitting the X button for each file - choose NO when it asks if you want to reboot):

C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\edldhuvw.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\SMSSU.EXE
C:\WINDOWS\System32\Tmntsrv32.EXE
c:\wp.exe
c:\wp.bmp

Reboot into Normal Mode run a new HijackThis scan. Save the log file and post it here.

For the wallpaper/background problem:

Right click on http://www.greyknigh...pairDesktop.reg and download that file. Double click on it and click on Yes when it asks you if you want to merge it into the registry. Once that's done, restart your computer.

Login as usual and now right click on your Desktop and go to Properties. Next go to Desktop tab->Customize Desktop button->Web tab. Uncheck everything listed there. Then delete all the entries listed except for 'My Current Home Page'. Click OK and OK.

Do this also:

Please empty any Quarantine folder in your antivirus program and purge all recovery items in the Spybot program (if you use it) before running this tool.

Download the Mwav virus checker at http://www.mwti.net/antivirus/mwav.asp (Use Link 3)

1. Save it to a folder.
2. Reboot into Safe Mode.
3. Double click the Mwav.exe file. This is a stand alone tool and NOT just a virus checker......so it won't install anything.
4. Select all local drives, scan all files, and press SCAN. When it is completed, anything found will be displayed in the lower pane.
5. In the Virus Log Information Pane......
Left click and highlight all the information in the Lower pane --- Use &CTRL C &on your keyboard to copy everything found in the lower pane and save it to a notepad file
*Note* If prompted that a virus was found and you need to purchase the product to remove the malware, just close out the prompt and let it continue scanning. We are not going to use this to remove anything...but to ID the bad files.

Once you copy that to a Notepad file...highlight the text and copy it here.

well, i was now wondering if the last post you made (the one after my hijack this post), is still what i should be trying to do, because it seems my computer has taken a turn for the worst. after i posted my hijack this report, i closed it (without doing anything about the results it gave me), and i restarted my computer and ran the avg antivirus again. it found another 532 virus' and trojans (aside from last nights 449), and cured 530. it asked me to reboot again, and upon returning to windows, all that was there was the blue background with the security warning. i've got no start menu, and no icons, just the blue screen. unable to log back onto the internet, i found that i could open the task manager and through that, i opened the avg antivirus program, and ran it for the [bleep] of it. it found 5 trojans, but it didn't fix anything. still just the blue screen. i restarted and ran the antivirus twice since then, and no virus' or trojans have been found, but i'm now left with a crippled computer. even safe mode is no longer functional. is this bad? what should i do now? although i seem to be able to run programs through my task manager, it will not let me surf the internet, so i'm on my roommate's computer right now.
sorry 'bout the ad-aware log, i thought you guys wanted to examine that before you even glanced at the hijack this report. i'm so greatful for the feedback.

...well, it seems i actually am able to surf the web through my task manager, but i can't find a way to get into the My Computer folder from there. is there some other way i can check my folder options, before i attempt downloading killbox? or should i just wait for you to tell me what to do next? i think that's just what i'm going to do. i have a feeling this is going to be much more complicated than before my computer was crippled :tazz:

hi there... i'v done nothing since my post last night (and nothing since my desktop failed). i just ran hijack this, thinking maybe a current log would be useful to someone. if it's not, let me know, i'll delete it. i still can't find a way to open My Computer, and thus, cannot figure out a way to view/change my folder options.

Yes, I still want you to continue on. Skip the folder options part then.

OK, do this first and see if it will calm things down a little:
Turn off system restore by right clicking on My Computer and go to Properties->System Restore and check the box for Turn off System Restore. Click Apply and then OK. Restart your computer and uncheck the same box to enable System Restore.

Now run this program:
The Temp folders should be cleaned out periodically as installation programs and hijack programs leave a lot of junk there. Download CleanUp! http://cleanup.stevengould.org/ (Alternate Link if main link don't work - http://www.greyknigh...spy/Cleanup.exe ) and install it. Run CleanUp! and click on CleanUp! button. When it asks you if you want to logoff, click on Yes.

Restart again. Now go to the HijackThis fix I gave you and do the things there (whatever applies, if they are not there, just continue on).

Restart and post a new HijackThis log when ready.

I think there was a problem with the forums here. That might be the reason for the earlier problems.

Is smitfraud still being detected? If not:

Your log is clean.

Turn off system restore by right clicking on My Computer and go to Properties->System Restore and check the box for Turn off System Restore. Click Apply and then OK. Restart your computer and uncheck the same box to enable System Restore.

Make sure to get the latest updates for Windows and Internet Explorer at http://v5.windowsupd...t.aspx?ln=en-us.

To help prevent future spyware installations/infections, please read the Anti-Spyware Tutorial and use the tools provided.

Are there any problems now? If not, you should be set to go.

no, it seems as though smitfraud is gone, but i still have the blue security warning, no icons, no start menu or start bar. you gave me instructions for getting my background back; will my entire desktop return as well? also, when i right click on the greyknight.com/spy/wallpaper link, there's no download option, and when i click on the link, it takes me to a set of commands that are obviously supposed to be copy and pasted somewhere. how exactly do i go about downloading this? below is the instructions you gave be in an earlier post. i'm also not exactly sure how to find the best windows update, being that i no longer even want internet explorer. where should i go to do that?

"For the wallpaper/background problem:

Right click on http://www.greyknigh...pairDesktop.reg and download that file. Double click on it and click on Yes when it asks you if you want to merge it into the registry. Once that's done, restart your computer.

Login as usual and now right click on your Desktop and go to Properties. Next go to Desktop tab->Customize Desktop button->Web tab. Uncheck everything listed there. Then delete all the entries listed except for 'My Current Home Page'. Click OK and OK."

I assume you didn't run that yet? You should not LEFT click on that link. I want you to RIGHT click on that link I gave you and choose SAVE AS. Now save it to your desktop. Go to your desktop and double click on that file you just saved. Choose yes to add it to the registry.

See if you can change the background now.

When did you lose the start menu (blue bar at the bottom)?

Hit ctrl+alt+del and then go to File->New Task and type in sfc /scannow and hit OK. Let it run and see if it can find any missing or corrupted system files.

i lost the start menu by my forth post... before we even got started with any of the real instructions. it went when everything else went. when i try to start sfc / scannow, a black menu opens momentarily, for a split second, and then disappears. nothing in the task manager opens up when i hit ok (except for everything else. the sfc / scannow just doesn't seem to wanna open).
