I/O device error all of a sudden

First I hope I posted in the correct forum

I was trying to read my scandisk which I have done thousands of times. Today I got I/O device error..I cant upload my pictures :)

What causes this?

How to fix, I found free programs to fix but not sure if I should.

I have windows xp/desktop

Any help would be greatly appreciated
