Hi,

I made a post here http://www.geekstogo...ow-t232953.html but I don't think it's not my browser as I have noticed my my computer stays connected to the router but my router keeps intermittently disconnecting from the internet as the small globe in the bottom right corner keeps disappearing.

Please help I have been searching for the last two days for problems it might be and now im totally at a dead end.

Im using Vista and all this has started ever since I reinstalled Vista a bout a week ago.

Step 1 - Connectivity test:

• Select Start
• In the Start Search field type cmd -- right-click on the cmd program and choose Run as administrator

If you find any, please post the relevant heading, along with the details inside by double clicking on the error/warning, and then copy/pasting the information from within.
  *Note: You'll mainly be looking for DHCP and TCP/IP errors/warnings -- however any and all errors may be relevant.

Step 4 - Restart your machine in Safe Mode with Networking:
Please restart the problematic machine in Safe Mode with Networking and then see if your pages still load slowly -- do they?

Step 2. I tried to post a scrren shot but can't even do that due to the connection, just constantly say "analysing attachment" and the SS was only 210KB anyway both release and renew in cmd said that "No operation can be performed due to media not connected" or something like that and on the right hand side it sai "disconnected" all the way down 4-5 times.


Step 3. There is a ridiculous amount of error and warnings too many to post but here is a few from the DHCP. The last pasted warning message is from the ICP/IP but there are are 3 but they all look like the same message. The rest posted are from DHCP but there are many more that all look simular along with lots more from other catergories such as WLAN auto config, servicing, volsnap ETC I have no clue what any of this is so please tell me if you need more posted to help you.

Step 4. I plugged in my ethernet connection in safe mode and normal mode and it doesn't seem as fast as it should be but not as slow as it was with wireless, still slow though in my opinion.

My first suggestion would be to ensure you have the latest drivers installed for your network adapter. Since you only recently re-installed Vista, outdated drivers could be causing your issue. If you have the latest drivers installed, and the issue persists, please continue.

Step 1 - Disable IPv6:
*Note: please only follow these steps if you do not use IPv6 for any applications (90% of home users do not need/use IPv6 at this time).

• Select Start
• In the Start Search field type ncpa.cpl and press the Enter key on your keyboard.
• In the new window, right-click on your Wireless Network Connection and select Properties.
• In the This connection uses the following items section, remove the tick beside (i.e. disable) Internet Protocol Version 6 (TCP/IPv6) and then press the OK button.

Step 2. I'd like to see how slow your connection is going; please do the following.

• In the new command prompt window, please type the following commands (*Note: the tracert will take a minute or two to complete; each ping will take approximately 10 seconds to complete -- wait for the previous command to finish before going onto the next):
  • tracert google.com
  • route print
  • ping 127.0.0.1
  • ping google.com
  • ping 209.85.171.100
• Right-click on the command prompt window, select Select All and then press the ENTER key on your keyboard; this will copy the text; you should now be able to paste it into your next response.

Can you please post some of the WLAN auto config errors. Does the computer experiencing issues roam a lot (i.e. move in between networks), or is it a stationary machine?

Do you have any other computers in your network? Do they experience the same issue? Have you tried changing your router's broadcasting channel (you can do this by logging into the routers web interface -- look for a Broadcast channel and change it's value to 1, 6 or 11).

The next time you "lose your connection", please do the following.

Step 3 - Export your wireless settings:

• Select Start
• In the Start Search field type cmd -- right-click on the cmd program and choose Run as administrator
• In the new command prompt window, type netsh wlan show all > C:\results.txt
• Navigate to your C: drive and open the text file results.txt -- please copy/paste the contents of this file into your next response.

There is a laptop (not mine) that is on the network and the connection isn't great but it has always been slow and is quite a old laptop. I just changed the broadcoast number, it was already set to channel 6 so I have changed it to 11, no change in speed.

I don't know if this makes any differnt but last night I was watching a film and half way through I wanted to check something on the internet and my whole computer just completely froze. I waited a couple of mintues and and then tried to do alt, ctrl + delete and even that didn't work it was just froze. I hit a few random keys on my keyboard and the computer started beeping at me so I had to pull the plug, Thought it was strange as there is a almost nothing on my computer regarding bulky application nor was I running anything else aprt form WMP and attempting to run firefox, also my computer has never froze on me like that and was the first time.

It's taking me 20+ minute to submit this post, just keeps loading for ages and then eventually loads a blank white screen and says "Done" bottom left.... ARRGGHHHH

Turning off IPV6 hasn't help either.

I'd like to see what's running on your machine. Aside from the General Failure error on your trace, your pings look fine. Have you installed any anti-virus / firewall software?

Step 1 - Generate a startup and uninstall list:
Please download HijackThis (if you do not already have it) and install it -- once it is installed, restart your computer. Once the computer starts up, can you please launch HijackThis and then select the option Open the Misc Tools section -- select Generate StartupList log. Save the startup list in a safe location. Now select the option Open Uninstall Manager and then click Save list -- save it to a safe location. Please post the contents of the startup list and the uninstall list in your next response.

You actually posted an ipconfig /all -- perhaps the command didn't get saved to results.txt correctly.

Like I said, all of your pings seem to indicate that you're receiving a solid connection, so you really shouldn't be having so much trouble online. When you were in safe mode, was the Internet as slow, or just a "little slow"?

Could you please answer this question from my previous post (I slipped it in there amongst a few other questions, so it's not surprising if you missed it):

Does the computer experiencing issues roam a lot (i.e. move in between networks), or is it a stationary machine?

I actually need to know this before I get you to do a step that may resolve all those DHCP errors that you have.

I just tried safe mode again with networking and it definatly is faster I and I did not get too much lag, but it does take several seconds to load my home page instead of being instant as before my reinsatll of Vista, the lag is still obvious in normal mode and is still loading the odd blank white page.

Sorry I did read that question before and must have forgot to reply to it. No it doesn't move between networks it always connected to the same network, my network. The only times it disconnects is when the small globe at the bottom right hand corner dissapears randomly usually when im trying to load a web page. When you say "stationary machine" it is a desk top not a laptop and it automatically connects to one and only network so yes it's stationary.

I have installed some antvirus programmes a few days ago but it was after experienceing thses problems I am having now so I don't think it is the problem but the programme is AVG licenced edition, I also attempted to install SpyGaurd but I had some error message when trying to update. SpyGaurd was recommend to me over a year ago buy a MOD here when I posted a hijackthis report due to some virus I had. 3 programmes were recommened to me by a MOD on here regarding safe surfing and virus's, one being SpyGaurd but can't remmember the other two. Those programmes were great but I see they are not in the download section anymore so I am trying to find other programmes that work well together as they did.

The step by steps you asked me to do in hijackthis, is that scanning for malicious programmes ? I would like to make a report and post the results if I haven't already done so above, if you could tell me how.

I just tried safe mode again with networking and it definatly is faster I and I did not get too much lag, but it does take several seconds to load my home page instead of being instant as before my reinsatll of Vista, the lag is still obvious in normal mode and is still loading the odd blank white page.

Sorry I did read that question before and must have forgot to reply to it. No it doesn't move between networks it always connected to the same network, my network. The only times it disconnects is when the small globe at the bottom right hand corner dissapears randomly usually when im trying to load a web page. When you say "stationary machine" it is a desk top not a laptop and it automatically connects to one and only network so yes it's stationary.

I have installed some antvirus programmes a few days ago but it was after experienceing thses problems I am having now so I don't think it is the problem but the programme is AVG licenced edition, I also attempted to install SpyGaurd but I had some error message when trying to update. SpyGaurd was recommend to me over a year ago buy a MOD here when I posted a hijackthis report due to some virus I had. 3 programmes were recommened to me by a MOD on here regarding safe surfing and virus's, one being SpyGaurd but can't remmember the other two. Those programmes were great but I see they are not in the download section anymore so I am trying to find other programmes that work well together as they did.

The step by steps you asked me to do in hijackthis, is that scanning for malicious programmes ? I would like to make a report and post the results if I haven't already done so above, if you could tell me how.

After trying to post my last post for 20 plus minutes, all I was getting was "waiting for geeksto go..." in the bottom left corner and after 2-3 minutes it would load a blank white page and the globe would disappear in the bottom right corner. I just diabled the wireless device and plugged in the ethernet cable and it was still slow but at least I managed to post the first time I hit "post reply". Weird ... When I click "update drivers" in device manager it says the card has all up to date drivers.

Just thought I should let you know this so you have as much info as possible.

Have a look in this thread -- Preventing Malware and Safe Computing -- I think you might find the programs you're looking for.

Please completely uninstall PeerGuardian 2.0 as this would be the most likely culprit -- does the issue persist?

If it does, try starting your machine in a clean boot state and see if the symptoms persist.

Step 1 - Start your machine in a clean boot state:

• Select Start
• In the Start Search field type msconfig and press the enter key.
• In the new window, select the General tab and then select Selective Startup.
• Click to clear the Load Startup Items check box.
• Verify that Load System Services and Use original boot configuration are checked.
• Click the Services tab.
• Click to select the Hide All Microsoft Services check box.
• Click Disable All, and then click OK.
• When you are prompted, click Restart to restart the computer.

When the computer reboots, does your Internet still crawl?
*Note: To return Windows to a normal startup mode, please do the following:

• Select Start, and then click Run.

If you believe that your machine is infected, I suggest you go to the Malware Forum and run all the steps located in the START HERE thread. These self-help tools will allow you to clean up to 70% of problems on your own. If you are still having problems after performing these steps, then please follow Step Five: Rootkit Detection and Step Six: Post an OTListIt2 Log; ensure you post your logs in the Malware Forum. If you are unable to run and/or post any of these logs, then mention that in your initial post in the topic you create in that forum.

If you are still having problems after being given a clean bill of health from the malware expert, then please return to THIS thread and we will pursue other options to help you solve your current problem(s).

Ok, I followed those steps above and it still crawls, the last few days I have been using a ethernet cable and it runs at normal speed so it must be something to do with my wireless settings or my card. The card has all up to date drivers and it did run fine before.

I ran all the recommended virus scanners and two trojons were found in the registy but they were quarentined and deleted with no problems by malwarebytes. I have post the equivilent of Hijackthis results in the malware removal section just incase but im sure it will come back clean and I don't have any virus or malware.

What would you suggest now ? Im using cable and everything seems fine but I would rather use my wireless

In the mean time, try downloading and running WLAN Optimizer -- see if the issue still occurs with your wireless connection.

Hey bud,

Earlier I had you try changing the broadcast channel on your router; can you please do this again but try all three, i.e. if it's set at 6, change it to 11 and test to see if things improve. If not, try 1. If you still don't notice an improvement, please try change the wireless mode on your adapter.

• Select Start
• In the Start Search field type ncpa.cpl and press the ENTER key on your keyboard.
• In the new window, right-click on your Wireless Network Connection and select Properties.
• In the new window, press the Configure.. button.
• Select the Advanced tab.
• In this new window, you should see a Property: list. Within this list, look for an item called something similar to Wireless mode (the exact name will vary depending on your manufacturer).
• Note down the value it is set at, and then try changing the value between the different modes available; see if you notice any improvement between each mode.

Also, just to clarify, you don't actually lose your Internet connection, do you? It's simply slow, correct?
