I have an alienware desktop, downloaded the driver for the oboard sound for the 680i from their support section.

Installed it, nothing good came of it. My sound icons in the systray dissappeared upon restart and still had no sound (every sound option was greyed out at this point). Did a shutdown, upon starting, windows found new hardware wizard, auto'd my way through, sound icons are displayed again in the systray.

Device mangager shows everything is working properly, and I cannot see any conflicts or question marks (nor unknown devices).

I've read a few posts before and noticed everest was a common thing in the no sound department, so I have included the report below until PCI.

It's very possible, your on-board sound chip went south. You may need to buy new sound card.

Thanks Broni

I was kind of thinking that, as most things that other people were told to try had already been done... so I ordered a cheap card already.

Hi again

I bought, and installed a new sound card (Creative Labs Sound Blaster Audigy SE 7.1).

Not the greatest sound I've noticed already... but it's better than mute...

Thanks for the advice.

Is there a way to get the front port on the case to work somehow?

Good news :)
What front port?

My Comcast email has been acting up, so I'm not receiving any email notifications, but I'll be checking this thread periodically.

Good news indeed.

My case has a headset port on the front, along with some other stuff...

Now when I plug my headset into my front port the lights show that it should be working (on the headset (maybe because it's just receiving power?)) but no sound comes through.

It's very possible when the onboard sound chipset went bad it took the capability to hear sound thru your headphones.
Something you could try is trace the connector for your front speaker connector to where it connects to your motherboard. See if there is a place on the new soundcard to connect to just like it. If so then try connecting to it. It's a simple ideal but it may just work. Also if you can do you know what motherboard you have?
There should be a manual for it that was included with all your packaging. That will help in doing some research on the connectors
