Aurora and pop-ups(resolved)

Hi, I am new here. I keep getting pop-ups on my pc these days. some of them have "Aurora" on the title bar but some don't, so I am not sure if they are all from Aurora, but I started getting these pop-ups on the same day. I have tried Adware SE and Norton Antivirus 2005 but pop-ups are still coming back. Could someone help me solve the problem? here is my hijackthis log, thanks in advance.

Hi jveronica,

There are several infections on your PC so we will tackle them in a sequence.

Please download the trial version of Ewido Security Suite here:
http://www.ewido.net/en/download/
Install it, and update the definitions to the newest files. Do NOT run a scan yet.

Please run Notepad and copy the following text into a new file:

sc stop SvcProc
sc delete SvcProc

attrib -s -r -h svcproc.exe
del nail.exe

del DrPMon.dll
exit

Save the file to the desktop as remove.bat and make sure the "Save as type" field says "All files".

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4) Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

For additional help in booting into Safe Mode, see the following site:

Once in Safe Mode, please double-click on remove.bat. A window should open and close very quickly --- this is normal.

Then please run Ewido, and run a full scan. Post the log from the scan here for me.

Then please run HijackThis, click Scan, and check:

F2 - REG:system.ini: Shell=Explorer.exe C:\WINDOWS\Nail.exe

Close all open windows except for HijackThis and click Fix Checked.

Restart your computer in normal mode and please post a new HijackThis log, as well as the log from the Ewido scan.

thanks for your reply.

I have trouble running Ewido. it encountered an error and it was closed toward the end of the full scan, so I wasn't able to get the log. I repeated the scan and the same thing happened. would you please give me further advice? here's the latesest hijackthis log:

Lets get on with the next part of our fix.

Please carry out a free online virus scan from the following link. Put in your name, for company type anything you want and put in email address in relevent box.

Kaspersky

Download the following program, install it but do not run it.

Cleanup

Next boot into SAFE MODE.

Press Ctrl/Alt/Delete, processes and if the following is running end task it.

Now set PC to show hidden files and using windows explorer locate and delete the following if found.

C:\WINDOWS\system32\nspD.dll (file missing)

Now run Cleanup to clear out temp files, junk etc.

Try to run Ewido once more

Reboot into normal mode and rescan with HJT and post the log back, together with the ewido result.

I did what you said, and again, Ewido stopped running when the scan was almost done. should I reinstall Ewido?

O4 - Global Startup: Microsoft Office.lnk = C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office10\OSA.EXE <----This is a known resource hog. All componants of Office can be accessed via Start/Programs and so this can safely be removed.

If you decide to remove above, rescan with HJT, check above entry, ensure no windows open except HJT and click fix checked.

Then download the following program.

Silent Runners
Unzip it to a permanent folder.
Start SilentRunners.vbs
When your antivirus is giving an alert, do not block this. Allow the script.
Copy and paste the content of the txtfile you get afterwards in your next reply.

Reopen Ewido, check for any updates and boot into SAFE MODE.

See if Ewido will run in safe mode.

Rescan with HJT and post the log back with silent runners log

Hi usetobe,

now I am up to the script part. I can't open it (not blocked by antivirus, just no action). which program should I use? Is it because something was preset to prevent running script? where should I go to change the setting? thanks a lot!

Hi jveronica,

Try the silent runners again and just wait a while once you double click it, it sometimes looks like it isn't doing anything and you have to be patient.

If it definately doesn't do anything do the next procedure.

Download: StartDreck from: http://www.niksoft.a.../startdreck.htm

Extract the file into c:\startdreck.
Navigate to c:\startdreck and double-click on Startdreck.exe
When the program opens click on the Config button.
Then click on the unmark all button.
Put checkmarks in the following checkboxes:
Under Registry put a checkmark in the Run Keys checkbox.
Under System/Drivers put a check in the Running Proccess checkbox.
Press the OK button.
Press the Save button.

Type in the location you want to save the log to, or use the defaults which will save the log into the directory you are running the program from. If you choose the defaults the filename for the log will be StartDreck.log.

Open the StartDrek.log, copy and paste the results of that log here..

Try Ewido in Safe mode no matter what occurs with the above prcedures and post the log back here if successful.

After you have considered the optional as per my last post, also rescan with HJT (PC IN NORMAL MODE NOT SAFE MODE) and post log back

Hi jveronica,

From your log, I see nothing in the ways of trojans, nor any evil entities attempting to possess your computer, except for Windows but it's too late for that one. :tazz:

Congratulations your log now appears to be clean.

Here are some tips, to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future, I strongly recommend installing the following applications:

Detect and Remove Programs:

How to use Ad-Aware to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Ad-Aware.
How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.

Prevention Programs:

Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
IE/Spyad <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.

Other necessary Programs:

AntiVirus Program<= An AntiVirus program is a must! Whether it is a free version like AVG or Anti-Vir, or a shareware version like Norton or Kapersky, this is a must have.
Firewall<= A firewall is definatley a must have. Two good free versions are Sygate and ZoneLabs.
More Secure Browser<= Internet Explorer is not the most secure and best browser. There are safer and better alternatives available. I recommend Firefox, however Opera and SlimBrowsers are good as well.

Hi usetobe, thank you for your help. I am so happy that the log is finally clean. so far, my computer is running OK except a few casino popups (maybe that is the remaining problem you mentioned above). again, thanks a lot for helping me to fix the problem.
