dvd-r drive is showing blank discs as full

The reason I am posting here is that originally I thought my dvd burner had gone bad, but after replacing it, the same error occurred. Neither will read blank discs as blank, they say they are full. Since a brand new drive is doing the same thing I wonder if there is something that has gotten into my system to cause this.

Please let me know if this could be caused at all by malware/spyware, and if not, where they heck do I go?
