For a little over a week now, I've been having an issue with real bad lag while playing City of Heroes. I contacted their support and they had me run a program called PingPlotter to test the connection to the server. They determined that I was getting intermittent packet loss along hops 3, 4, 5, 8, and 9, which they told me was indicative of a compound problem. I have the results file if anyone is familiar with the program and would like to see it. They had me disable all startup and background programs and that didn't help any. They said there really wasn't much more they could do for me and that until it cleared up, I'd continue to experience the problem.

I contacted my ISP (Verizon) and all they told me was that there were no outages on their end, so it wasn't their problem. I've also tried flushing the DNS cache. Again, no real improvement. I'm hoping that someone might have some suggestions to help me solve this problem.

did you provide your results? An outage is different than say network congestion. Feel free to attach the file to your post.

The conversation with Verizon lasted all of about 5 minutes and the guy told me that there was no outages and no problem on their end, that it must be on the game's end. Basically, it felt like they blew me off.

It won't let me upload the type of file that the results were saved as. The extension is .pp2.

rename the file ext to TXT instead of pp2. I'll change it on my end.

If you know the ip address for the server you play on or connect to..... then I want you to do the following

Go to start run and type in CMD

This will launch a command prompt. IN the cmd window enter the following: ping 127.0.0.1 . 127.0.0.1 needs to replaced with the city of hero's ip address.
Copy and paste the results here.

Then, in the cmd window, enter tracert 127.0.0.1. Again sub the city of hero's ip for 127.0.0.1
copy and past the results here.

This should actually provide more info than the program they had you run.

this is what I interpret.

-verizon network is working fine. No problems with your isp

- somewhere after step 10 the network is inaccessible.

so, ncsoft says that its not thier end. If it was, there would be lots of complaints on the boards about it.
http://www.cityofher...ver_status.html

That means that somewhere on the road from your pc to their servers is some major problems. Unfortunately there isn't much you can do about it.

Now, the only thing I can is make an assumption. That they have ping and tracert functionality disabled or restricted to help them manage network traffic and prevent ddos attacks. Only way to know for sure is to ask them, Limelight Networks; Email: support@llnw.com. Make sure you provide them the ping and tracert info that you provided here. I don't know if they will respond. Hopefully they will.

I e-mailed Limelight's support. Hopefully, I will get a response from them.

There was a thread on the City of Heroes boards about a week and a half ago, right around the time that I first started having the issue, in which several people reported experiencing lag and rubberbanding. I didn't come across a resolution anywhere in there and the thread died out in a day or so. http://boards.cityof...11#Post13175392

I posted a thread a couple of days ago after NCSoft's support said that there wasn't much else they could do for me. It got a couple of responses, but no other reports of a similar issue.

I'll post an update if I get a response from Limelight. If it is an issue on their network, is it something that should clear up? I'm almost going on 2 weeks of experiencing this. I'm not very familiar with network routes. Is that something that someone could change (either Verizon or NCSoft)?

I received a response from Limelight, pretty quickly actually. Here is what they had to say:

Al,

Hello I have investigated the issue you have reported and I am unable to reach gw-eastcoast.plaync.com [216.107.248.3] as well. I have attempted from multiple networks and it appears as that machine is offline or requests are being blocked by firewall. The issue does not lie on our network but seems isolated to the NC soft server. Please contact NC Soft to correct issue and they may contact us if we may assist them further.

So, it looks like my next step is to go back to NC Soft with this and see what they have to say.

Ok, so NC Soft responded to me. They said that their servers block ping requests to outside traffic, so it is normal for tracerout and ping tests to come back unreachable. The original PingPlotter test had me use the IP of their west coast servers since that is the one I was playing on. They are suggesting that I play on an east coast server to try a determine if it is an issue with a middle ISP, Limelight, or a local PC or ISP issue on my end.

Should I keep updating here as I go?
