If you can't help me, then I am committing myself into the local funny farm!

At the outset, I must tell you that I pretty technically ignorant. In my description of my problem (following), I will use terms that I don't even understand. I hope that - if you can find my problem - I am bright enough to follow directions and get it solved.

When I log on to the internet my "home page" goes (nearly) immediately to some "Quicknavigate" page that tries to link me to spyware remover sellers, AND I get a little box that says that "My PC is infected with spyware" (well, duh!). This same "screen" comes up on certain of my bookmarked sites as well.

I have downloaded and run: XoftSpy, Ad-Aware, AVG Anti Virus (the free one), and CWShredder. The spyware killers found tons of bad stuff and supposedly 'killed' it all. AVG found some 60 problem files - lots of trojan horses - and "healed" them.

However, I cannot run the SP-1 service pack fromMicrosoft... the Quicknavigate" page replaces the Windows page in a heartbeat after it initially comes up.

I did run HijackThis, though. Here's the logfile:

Oops... I forgot to also report that my "System Restore" feature will not work properly anymore either. The little calendar that I would use to select a restore point will not show any month other than May (current month) with restore points limited to just a very few days... even then, it will not do a restore.

Welcome to Geeks to Go z-me-go,

Did you follow the recomendations here?
First,
Please make sure that you save HijackThis in a permanent folder (i.e. C:\HJT). This ensures backups are saved and
accessible.

Next,
Please read these instructions carefully and print them out! Be sure to follow ALL instructions!

Please right-click: HERE and go to Save As (in Internet Explorer it's "Save Target As") in order to download Grinler's reg file. Save it to your desktop.

Locate "smitfraud.reg" on your desktop and double-click it. When asked if you want to merge with the registry, click YES. Wait for the "merged successfully" prompt then follow the rest of the instructions below.

Go to Start > Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs and remove the following programs, if found:

Security IGuard
Virtual Maid
Search Maid

Exit Add/Remove Programs.

*IMPORTANT*CLICK THIS LINK TO LEARN HOW TO VIEW HIDDEN FILES

I need you to copy all of the Killbox file paths below and paste them into Notepad.

* Please download the Killbox by Option^Explicit. *In the event you already have Killbox, this is a new version that I need you to download.

* Save it to your desktop.

* Please double-click Killbox.exe to run it.

* Select "Delete on Reboot".

* Open the Notepad file where you saved the file paths earlier and copy the file paths below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C

C:\wp.exe
C:\wp.bmp
C:\bsw.exe
C:\Windows\sites.ini
C:\Windows\popuper.exe
C:\Windows\System32\wldr.dll
C:\Windows\System32\helper.exe
C:\Windows\System32\intmon.exe
C:\Windows\System32\shnlog.exe
C:\Windows\System32\intmonp.exe
C:\Windows\System32\msmsgs.exe
C:\Windows\system32\msole32.exe
C:\Windows\System32\ole32vbs.exe

* Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose "Paste from Clipboard".

* Click the red-and-white "Delete File" button. Click "Yes" at the Delete on Reboot prompt. Click "No" at the Pending Operations prompt.

If your computer does not restart automatically, please restart it manually.

While your computer is restarting, tap the F8 key continually until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode, then hit enter.

Make sure you can view hidden files.

Using Windows Explorer, delete the following, if found, (please do NOT try to find them by "search" because they will not show up that way)

FOLDERS to delete (in bold) if found:

C:\Program Files\Search Maid
C:\Program Files\Virtual Maid
C:\Windows\System32\Log Files
C:\Program Files\Security IGuard

While still in Safe Mode, do the following:

Make sure all programs and windows are closed. Run HiJackThis and place a check next to the following items, if found, then click FIX CHECKED

JasMonkey ;)

You are my hero! I [think that I] did all of the steps that you suggested (well, at least most of them), and wonder of wonder, everything seems to be working just fine now! :tazz:

You really have no idea just how technically incompetent I am to have been digging around in the brains of my computer... but, thanks to your excellent help, I must have done at least enough of it right to get my computer back!

I hope that there is not some debris left in there that will re-haunt me ;) ... at least I have installed Service Pack 2; maybe that will help!

Again, Thanks so very, very much.

Hi z-me-go,

I am glad your computer is running better. ;)
If you will, please post a fresh HijackThis log so I can make sure there isn't anything else we need to remove.

;) Ok z-me-go,

Your log looks clean. :tazz:

There are a few left over entries that need to be removed with HijackThis.

Please reboot into safe mode (continually tap the F8 key while your system is starting, select Safe Mode from the menu), open HijackThis and do a scan, when if finishes, put a check next to the following entries. Then click fix checked.

O2 - BHO: VMHomepage Class - {FFFFFFFF-FFFF-FFFF-FFFF-FFFFFFFFFFFF} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\hpCA06.tmp (file missing)
O23 - Service: Network Security Service (NSS) ( 11Fßä#·ºÄÖ`I) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\system32\netms.exe (file missing)

Reboot your PC.

Now, if you would, please scan again with HijackThis and post a new log.

Ok,

Go here, http://osc.geekstogo...rviceremove.reg and click file, save page as, and save it to your desktop. Then double click the .reg file on your desktop. It will ask you if you want to merge it with the registry, click yes.

Doing this will remove this last left over entry in your log, O23 - Service: Network Security Service (NSS) ( 11Fßä#·ºÄÖ`I) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\system32\netms.exe (file missing)

After doing that, reboot your computer and post a new log. :tazz:

Ok now I need you to do this,

Go to start, run type "services.msc" with out the quotes find the service.

Network Security Service

Right click and stop it, make the start up type to disabled. When you have done that go into Hijackthis , then open the misc tools section then click delete an NT service and delete

11Fßä #·ºÄÖ`I

After you do that, please post a new log.

JasMonkey...

Everything seemed to go OK 'till I got to the last step. Then I got a box that said:

Service '11Fßä #·ºÄÖ`I' was not found in the Registry. Make sure you entered the short name of the service., vbExclamation

Did I do something wrong?

;) Hi z-me-go,

No, you didnt do anything wrong. You did everything right. The last of the left over entries have been removed. :tazz: How is your computer running now?

Congratulations! Your system is CLEAN ;)

The following is a list of tools and utilities that I like to suggest to people. This list is full of great tools and utilities to help you understand how you got infected and how to keep from getting infected again.
  • Spybot Search & Destroy - Uber powerful tool which can search and annhilate nasties that make it onto your system. Now with an Immunize section that will help prevent future infections.
  • AdAware - Another very powerful tool which searches and kills nasties that infect your system. AdAware and Spybot Search & Destroy compliment each other very well.
  • SpywareBlaster - Great prevention tool to keep nasties from installing on your system.
  • SpywareGuard - Works as a Spyware "Shield" to protect your computer from getting malware in the first place.
  • IE-SpyAd - puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all.
  • CleanUP! - Cleans temporary files from IE and Windows, empties the recycle bin and more. Great tool to help speed up your computer and knock out those nasties that like to reside in the temp folders.
  • Windows Updates - It is very important to make sure that both Internet Explorer and Windows are kept current with the latest critical security patches from Microsoft. To do this just start Internet Explorer and select Tools > Windows Update, and follow the online instructions from there.
  • Google Toolbar - Free google toolbar that allows you to use the powerful Google search engine from the bar, but also blocks pop up windows.
  • Trillian or Miranda-IM - These are Malware free Instant Messenger programs which allow you to connect to multiple IM services in one program! (AOL, Yahoo, ICQ, IRC, MSN)
To find out more information about how you got infected in the first place and some great guidelines to follow to prevent future infections you can read this article by Tony Klein

Wonderful! Absolutely wonderful!

I guess that we (really, you) can mark this one "Resolved"

I can't thank you enough. Before all of this fracas, I didn't even know what the "Safe Mode" was, much less how to get there (can you believe anybody could be so out of it?).

Here's wishing you blessings, peace, and the car of your dreams!

Seriously, I am very, very grateful indeed.
