Hello helper...
I have been following the previous threads on this subject and tried to fix the problems I have been experiencing. It started about 1 week ago w/ a popuper program running. Since then, it has become worse w/ popups and my homepage being taken over by a blank page. Also, when I went through all of the necessary steps you folks have listed to fix most malware probs, it will not allow me to access Windows updates, although it was up-to-date as of 2 days ago.
I hate to bother everyone, since you seem so busy with this, but I am really not that experienced w/ fixing anything like this on my own-I just don't want to make it worse!
Here is my log from Hijackthis, and thank you for any assistance on this!!!!

Hi dfreethy,

Join the club of those infected by the latest smitfraud infection.

Follow the instructions below.

Please read these instructions carefully and print them out! Be sure to follow ALL instructions!

Download SmitFraud Reg to your desktop.

Locate "smitfraud.reg" on your desktop and double-click it. When asked if you want to merge with the registry, click YES. Wait for the "merged successfully" prompt then follow the rest of the instructions below.

Go to Start > Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs and remove the following programs, if found:

Security IGuard
Virtual Maid
Search Maid

Exit Add/Remove Programs.

*IMPORTANT*CLICK THIS LINK TO LEARN HOW TO VIEW HIDDEN FILES

I need you to copy all of the Killbox file paths below and paste them into Notepad.

* Please download the Killbox by Option^Explicit. *In the event you already have Killbox, this is a new version that I need you to download.

* Save it to your desktop.

* Please double-click Killbox.exe to run it.

* Select "Delete on Reboot".

* Open the Notepad file where you saved the file paths earlier and copy the file paths below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C

C:\wp.exe
C:\wp.bmp
C:\bsw.exe
C:\Windows\sites.ini
C:\Windows\popuper.exe
C:\Windows\System32\wldr.dll
C:\Windows\System32\helper.exe
C:\Windows\System32\intmon.exe
C:\Windows\System32\shnlog.exe
C:\Windows\System32\intmonp.exe
C:\Windows\System32\msmsgs.exe
C:\Windows\system32\msole32.exe
C:\Windows\System32\ole32vbs.exe

* Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose "Paste from Clipboard".

* Click the red-and-white "Delete File" button. Click "Yes" at the Delete on Reboot prompt. Click "No" at the Pending Operations prompt.

If your computer does not restart automatically, please restart it manually.

While your computer is restarting, tap the F8 key continually until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode, then hit enter.

Make sure you can view hidden files.

Using Windows Explorer, delete the following, if found, (please do NOT try to find them by "search" because they will not show up that way)

FOLDERS to delete (in bold) if found:

C:\Program Files\Search Maid
C:\Program Files\Virtual Maid
C:\Windows\System32\Log Files
C:\Program Files\Security IGuard

While still in Safe Mode, do the following:

Hi usetobe,
Thank you for replying. Your directions were very easy to follow and I certainly appreciate it!
I followed each step and now have this scan from activescan:

Incident Status
Location
Adware:Adware/SuperSpider No disinfected C:\Documents and Settings\Dana\Desktop\backups\backup-20050509-193215-836.dll
Adware:Adware/Coupons No disinfected C:\WINDOWS\cpbrkpie.ocx
Virus:Trj/Qhost.AF Disinfected C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\hosts.20050503-230259.backup
Virus:Trj/Qhost.AF Disinfected C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\hosts.20050508-231529.backup
Virus:Trj/Qhost.AF Disinfected C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\hosts.20050508-231530.backup
Adware:Adware/Virmaid No disinfected C:\WINDOWS\system32\perfcii.ini

I don't know if this is easy to read or not, so I attached the activescan file also.
Do all of the steps that you had me do fix all of the probs I was having?
Thank you so much again for your info and time!

Hi again,

You have 1 optional remove in HJT.

O4 - Global Startup: Microsoft Office.lnk = C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\OSA9.EXE <---- Office Startup Asistant is an optional item that if checked, will eliminate a known resource hog. You will still be able to start Office components from the Start menu.

If you decide to remove, scan with HJT, check above entry ensure no windows open and click fix checked. Then close HJT.

AFTER THAT

From your log, I see nothing in the ways of trojans, nor any evil entities attempting to possess your computer, except for Windows but it's too late for that one. :tazz:

Congratulations your log now appears to be clean. ;)

Here are some tips, to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future, I strongly recommend installing the following applications:

Detect and Remove Programs:
  • How to use Ad-Aware to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Ad-Aware.
  • How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.
Prevention Programs:
  • Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
  • Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
  • IE/Spyad <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
  • Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
Other necessary Programs:
  • AntiVirus Program<= An AntiVirus program is a must! Whether it is a free version like AVG or Anti-Vir, or a shareware version like Norton or Kapersky, this is a must have.
  • Firewall<= A firewall is definatley a must have. Two good free versions are Sygate and ZoneLabs.
  • More Secure Browser<= Internet Explorer is not the most secure and best browser. There are safer and better alternatives available. I recommend Firefox, however Opera and SlimBrowsers are good as well.
And also see TonyKlein's good advice
So how did I get infected in the first place? and AntiSpyware Net's spyware article: Spyware, Adware, Malware: What it is, how it got on my computer, how to get rid of it, and how to prevent it.

THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!!!! ;)
I truly cannot thank you enough for all of your help. Everything is back to normal and I proven to my husband that you don't need to wipe the entire hard drive to fix a problem. :tazz:
I also appreciate the info on prevention and detection of future problems...I was not familiar with all of this before.

I will be removing the add'l optional remove also.
One last ?...should I remove the Killbox/deldomains/smitfraud that are still on the desktop?

Thank you again!!!!!!
