Computer was running very well but was informed about the update from IE 7 to IE 8.

Installed version 8 and as soon as I went into opening the program nothing happened for about 20 seconds before it opened and then spent 15 seconds 'connecting' to google.

I also have Avant Browser as my main browser which i find very fast but this started to open after a long delay.

I then noticed even trying to open normal programs resulted in a delay where nothing seems to be happening then 'pow' it opens.

I did a system restore which took me back to version 7 and things seemed back to normal until i tried to print from the web page and nothing happened at all, then neither Avant or IE would let me download anything at all.

I installed Firefox which i had on a USB stick to re install IE 8 with the same set of events as previously.

I then tried to uninstall IE from both Revo uninstaller and 'add and remove programs'

The IE icon was still on the desktop so deleted it.

Re installed from scratch version 7 and the same problems with downloading and printing appeared again so once again installed version 8 over top and back to square one with a slug of a machine which seems to require 20 to 30 seconds to open anything, but when it does its as fast as before?

Have run spyware and AV and nothing found.

Any help or does anybody know why this could be happening?

To be honest i would like it back to IE 7 but cant understand why downloading or printing has been stopped?

Hey Rob,

There are a few possible causes for this, that I can think of. IE8 introduced a new indexing feature, which scans through your entire web history; many users have reported that this slows down their machines and the browser. You could try clear your history, either manually or using a program such as ATF Cleaner -- I will post how to use ATF Cleaner at the bottom (Step 1) -- and then see if IE8 is able to load faster.

The second possible cause is if you have a large Restricted Sites list, for example if you've used a program such as SpywareBlaster or SpyBot and "fully immunized" your connection, then this may be your issue. To check, launch IE8 and then goto Tools, select Internet Options and then press the Security tab. Select Restricted sites and then press the Sites button; do you have a large list of sites here?

Step 1 - Download and run ATF Cleaner
Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.

Caution: This program is for Windows 2000, XP and Vista only
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
If you use Firefox browserClick Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
If you use Opera browserClick Opera at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
For Technical Support, double-click the e-mail address located at the bottom of each menu.

Hi Dan

Thanks for the reply

Right i re installed IE8 after i had removed it and gone back to IE 6 with same consequences, i.e it would only open web pages thats all, all features like 'downloading, printing and even opening Internet Options' were not available, so kept using Firefox.

IE 8 back to same status, i.e takes forever to load and long wait before any action is completed.

Downloaded the program ATF and followed your instructions and hasn't made any differance.

Opened Spybot and 'Immunize' and the largest total it had was 10,490

Opened Spyware Blaster and it had a total of 12,283

Restricted sites in IE were by no means large i thought.

The problem i have is that as soon as i remove IE8 my machine with IE7 and Avant runs like a dream, BUT as i mentioned i cant really use Avant for e.g with anything more than basic browsing, anything else i have to open up Firefox.

I know people will say just use Firefox but i would really like to get IE and Avant back to the state they wer ein before i followed Microsofts recommendation and upgraded.

As a quick aside, my contempt for MS is growing as i actually clicked on a program on their official site to uninstall IE8 and leave the previous version in place and it actally removed Outlook Express and Media Player as well.

I only got them back when re installing IE8 !!!!!!!!!!! :)

Hey Rob,

For troubleshooting purposes, I'm going to get you to temporarily uninstall Spybot and Spyware Blaster, to see if they are indeed causing your issue. First of all, uninstall Spybot, as that is usually the program which causes the biggest conflict. So, remove it and then reboot your machine; does IE8 still play up? If it does, then try removing Spyware Blaster and then reboot -- does IE8 now work?

I know that suggesting the removal of security software to just get an application you'd more than likely prefer to simply remove isn't exactly ideal, however I don't know why reverting back to IE7 causes your other issues, so I won't be much help on that one. That is why I am pushing for getting IE8 working. I have found that IE8 is leaps and bounds superior to IE7, although I'm sure at this point you wouldn't agree -- perfectly understandable :)

I do believe that Spybot or Spyware Blaster is the issue here, and there are alternatives that I can recommend if that's the case. If I'm wrong, which is very possible, then we will look into trying to get you back to IE7, or I will request a few of our other techs to take a look at this.

Hi Dan

Uninstalled Spybot and Spyware Blaster to no avail.

timed IE 8 from double clicking the icon it took just short of 30 secs to start and then we had a further 25 seconds whilst it said 'connecting'

Avant took about 35 secs to start but once loaded it instantly connected to Google home page.

with IE7 both from a standing start were between 5 and 10 secs.

As mentioned its affecting other things on the computer like Outlook Express opening, everything seems to hang then start to work with IE8 installed. :)

Uninstalled Spybot and Spyware Blaster to no avail.

Ah, that's a shame -- sorry about that.

So, what would you like to do? Revert to IE7 and try to get it working, or try to get IE8 working? In the mean time, could you please try a few things for me.

Step 1 - Restart your machine in Safe Mode with Networking:
Please restart the problematic machine in Safe Mode with Networking and then see if IE8 is still slow; is it?
*Note: You will not be able to use a wireless connection while in Safe Mode; please ensure all tests are performed with a wired (Ethernet) connection.

Step 2 - Generate a startup and uninstall list:
Please download HijackThis (if you do not already have it) and install it -- once it is installed, restart your computer. Once the computer starts up, can you please launch HijackThis and then select the option Open the Misc Tools section -- select Generate StartupList log. Save the startup list in a safe location. Now select the option Open Uninstall Manager and then click Save list -- save it to a safe location. Please post the contents of the startup list and the uninstall list in your next response.

Thanks,
- Dan

To answer your first question in previous post, to be honest i'm not too bothered which version i have. I always tend to use Avant but as that runs on top of my existing IE when version 7 was installed and the computer ran fine in terms of speed, Avant had the same problems as IE7 i.e could browse pages no problem but any other function wasnt working.

With IE8 it also has the same problems that it now has functions working but takes an eternity to do any of them.

Hey Rob,

I've done a little more research, and apparently simply clearing your history doesn't reset the index searching, so that may still be the cause of your issue (do I sound desperate? :)) .

I'm going to quote the suggested solution, however before that we're going to back up your registry -- safety first :)

The steps that I am about to suggest involve modifying the registry. Modfying the registry can be dangerous so we will make a backup of the registry first.
Modification of the registry can be EXTREMELY dangerous if you do not know exactly what you are doing so follow the steps that are listed below EXACTLY. if you cannot preform some of these steps or if you have ANY questions please ask BEFORE proceeding.

Backing Up Your Registry
  • Download ERUNT
(ERUNT (Emergency Recovery Utility NT) is a free program that allows you to keep a complete backup of your registry and restore it when needed.)
  • Install ERUNT by following the prompts
(use the default install settings but say no to the portion that asks you to add ERUNT to the start-up folder, if you like you can enable this option later)
  • Start ERUNT
(either by double clicking on the desktop icon or choosing to start the program at the end of the setup)
  • Choose a location for the backup
(the default location is C:\WINDOWS\ERDNT which is acceptable).
  • Make sure that at least the first two check boxes are ticked
  • Press OK
  • Press YES to create the folder.

Registry Modifications
Here is the suggested solution; as mentioned above, if you have any questions or concerns, please ask before you make the changes. To open regedit, click Start, select Run, type regedit and press OK.

Naviagte to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsSearch\CrawlScopeManager\Windows\SystemIndex\WorkingSetRules

Go thru the sub keys and look for iehistory and ierss. In both keys there is
a DWORD named "Include". Change it from 1 to 0

Now goto Control Panel and Indexing Options and re-index.

Reboot your machine and see if there's any difference.

Hi Dan

Have backed up the registry using Erunt.

I cant find that Hkey in my Reg, i navigated as far as Microsoft, Windows Search but all i had in there were a folder called protocol handlers which did contain a couple of files with simalier names to the two you said.

Although they didnt have any DWORD named 'include' after it.

I have XP sp2 installed so not sure if that is a Vista thing, as i also dont have 'Indexing Options' in CP either.

To turn on the index on a drive i have to right click in my computer on the C:| drive and go through properties which i presume is the same.

:)

DAN !!

May have sorted it. Gulp.

Found out on a another forum that a lot of people were experiecing the same as me, they said it was the RTM? version of IE8 (i presume the official release)

When they installed (i used File Hippo to get this version) the RC1 version it was fast, so uninstalled the version i had, re installed 6 (same problems as before) installed the version RC1 and fingers crossed every thing is lightening at the moment.

If you don't hear from me again re this topic can i just say many thanks for the continued help to assisted me with.

I don't know if you wish to put this fix in a sticky as it could be very useful if others are having same problem as the fix took some finding.

(odds on i'm back when i turn machine on tomorrow and the snail re appears :)

Howdy Rob,

That's great to hear :) I hadn't actually heard of any such issue, so it's news to me -- thanks for letting me know. :)

Kudos to you for managing to track this one down on your own.
