Shuts down on own... no warning.
Everything runs very slow
New to internet, never on before
Using Norton
Windows update service 3 just installed
ie8 just installed, but tool bar is black.

I see that Epson file that could be something wrong? E_S42D1...

it looks like you may have a virus problem.
Please go to the malware forum and follow the instructions at the top....Especially the "You Must Read This Before Posting A HijackThis Log".

That will give you several steps that will help you clean up 70 percent of all problems by yourself. If at the end of the process you are still having difficulty--and you may not be-- then post a hijackthis log in THAT forum.
If after you have the same problem please return here and we will try to help you fix the problem. :)

Thanks Rshaffer,

I have searched the forums (before I posted) sorry for posting in the wrong place. I can't find anyone with my exact issue. I have may many....
I did see something about the epson E_S42D1... thing but did not understand if that was actually a problem or not.

I took out the 2 old 128 memory bars and installed 2 256 bars. The CPU would not power on. Then I tried one old and one new. That worked and is recognized. Computer ran noticably faster.
I have repetedly tried to install service 3 but I see that it is still not on ( see below)
I get a message to install my office small business CD for a file :SBERET.MSI and tell it to skip because I can not find the CD or the file in the computer.

It acts like it downloads SP3 then tries to install but I just keep getting the same message that updates are ready for my computer.

I think what is hanging things up is KB946648 and KB936929?

Any advice? Should I still post to the other forum?

Thanks!

HJT log appears to be clean.
Then, your first problem: 384.00 MB of RAM
XP would like to have at least 512MB of RAM

You may also have some other problems...
Navigate to: C:\Windows\Minidump folder.
If you see any .dmp files, zip all of them, and attach zipped file to your next reply.

I analyzed more, than a half of your dump files.
All errors:
NTFS_FILE_SYSTEM
PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA
IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL
KERNEL_MODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED_M
point to RAM problems, especially, since they list very various file being at fault:
Ntfs.sys
win32k.sys
EraserUtilRebootDrv.sys
ntoskrnl.exe
KSecDD.sys

I think, your best bet is to go to www.crucial.com, get couple of brand new RAM sticks, and go from there.

Thanks guys for all your help.
This CPU belonged to a friend, and they are just going to get a new one.
After considering the price of memory and since the thing only has a 40G drive we are looking for a new CPU.

I sincerely appreciate all your time and help!
