My fan runs almost constantly at a high roar. Even when no programs are in use it soars away non stop. Is someone juicing off my computer or is it a fan problem. Any ideas? Help!

service pack 1
gateway GT5670
processor: amd phenom 8400 triple core, 2.10ghz
memory - 3 gigs
32 bit

My C drive has 1 gig free out of 287 gigs, but even when i clear my backup files and have 40 gigs free the fan still rages on.

do you know which fan is turning?
What video do you have, is it onboard or a addon card?

no, i'm not even sure it's the fan, i just know the engine is roaring at a high rev constantly. It will get quiet for a few seconds (once every ten minutes) then race up again

That sounds more like a power supply fan. It could be video card if that is a addon card and its a higher end one. They have fans on them also and they do get warmer by nature.

I bought it new about a year and a half ago. I did have an NVidea video card installed for gaming.

ok so that was installed after you bought the system then if I understand you correctly.

The onboard video was nvidia also
NVIDIA GeForce 6150 SE

Also I should know if the system is still under warranty or not.
If so this will limit my ability to investigate the problem deeper.

no i didn't get the extended warrenty, it's a good computer, just that [bleep] tower sounds like bomber plane. What should I do?

oK that being taken care of.
Looking at the front of the computer. The left side panel can be unscrewed from the back of the system.
Let's get it open and see what is making all the noise. You can shut the system down if you don't feel comfortable with it running.
Once you have it open then restart the system and see if all the fans are turning.
There should be
One on the power supply
One on the cpu
and one on the front of the inside
There may be a extra one on the back inside also right above or below the power supply depending on where the power supply is located in your system.
Also if the video is a addon card there may be a fan on it.
One of these is going to be the problem if it is indeed a fan.
Post back with what you find.
If you have a digital camera you can take pictures of the inside and attach them to your next post. If they are to big then go Here and open a account. Upload your pictures there and post the link to them in your next post.

I only see two fans. One on the very back, and then the one making the noise is the big fan that's on the big green circuit board thing.... sorry i'm computer ignorant

If what you are describing is true then you are hearing the cpu fan. That is the fan that keeps the processor cool.
Is it turning like a normal fan or is it wobbling or slowing down and\or stopping?

it doesnt slow at all, just constant high speed noise, about every ten or fifteen minutes is will drop to normal speed for about five seconds and then start racing again. No wobbling though.

It sounds like you have just a noisey fan then.
Suggestions are:
Keep it and learn to live with the noise
Buy a new fan and replace it. There are allot of after market fans that will do the job just as well.
