Hi hi :)
First of all - thank You so much for helping me to clean up my laptop - it's working perfectly now !!!
Now another problem - my husband's got a new laptop - Toshiba/Windows Vista. I can not open most of the websites !!!
It shows either Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage or the adress is not valid.
When I tried to diagnose connection problem - it shows that I have to configure the firewall to allow connections through TCP port 80. But the firewall is already configured ! My wireless connection isn't that great but my laptop Dell/XP opens all the websites...
We have had this laptop since December and I hardly used it !!!
Feel so frustrated.... Pls, help me
Thanks
:)

Hey Liana :)

What's the name of the firewall you're using? If you hard-wire the laptop to the router (via an Ethernet cable), does the issue still occur? With the laptop hardwired to the router, try restarting it in Safe Mode with Networking -- can you access websites now?

You also mentioned "most of" -- does this mean that certain sites actually load? If so, can you please post some of the sites that load, and some that don't.

Finally, what's the make and model of your router (this information should be on the actual router itself)?

Thanks,
- Dan

1. I am using Windows Firewall
2. I can't use Ethernet cable because the Wireless Internet Service in my apartment is provided by the hotel, so the Internet is sharing and I don't have modem in my room. But I can open any website on my Dell laptop.
3. The website that I can open is only www.cabincrew.emirates.com, MSN n Skype. That's it.
4. and I can't open any other website -)) Pretty depressing, ha?

Thank You so much for Your help and I am not an English speaker and not that skillful with the comps, so thanks for Your patience as well.

Hey Liana,

There are a few possible causes. Do you have a different Internet Browser installed (such as Firefox)? Does the issue still occur in this browser as well? Launch Internet Explorer, press Tools then select Internet Options. Press the Security tab; what is your security level set at? Try lowering this setting and seeing if the issue continues.

Normally, the Windows Firewall doesn't cause these types of issues. However, please try to temporarily turn it off; to do this, follow the steps outlined in Turn Windows Firewall on or off. Once you have turned off the Windows firewall, does the issue still occur? If it does, please turn it back on.

To be honest, I think your issue is caused by something running on that laptop; so I'd like to see what is running. Please do the following (you'll need a USB chip or some other form of removable media in order to post these files -- or a network connection). If you don't have HJT downloaded on that laptop, you'll need to download it, then move it across and install it.

Step 1 - Generate a startup and uninstall list:
Please download HijackThis (if you do not already have it) and install it -- once it is installed, restart your computer. Once the computer starts up, can you please launch HijackThis and then select the option Open the Misc Tools section -- select Generate StartupList log. Save the startup list in a safe location. Now select the option Open Uninstall Manager and then click Save list -- save it to a safe location. Please post the contents of the startup list and the uninstall list in your next response.

Thanks,
- Dan

Hey Dan,
Hopefully there is everything that You asked for...

I have only IE on that laptop, i didn't download any other browser because I couldn't connect it to the Internet.

I tried to lower Security Level, alas....

I did turn Firewall Off (don't tell anybody!!!) and still didn't help.

What to do next ???

Ta, Dan...

There's really nothing running on that machine that would be causing the issue. Let's try a few of the more common fixes for IE. Please try each of the following steps; check to see if the issue was resolved before you move to the next step.

Step 1 - Empty the cache:
  • Launch Internet Explorer.
  • Press the Tools button then Internet Options.
  • In the new window, press the Delete files button. Check (tick) the option Delete all offline content and then press OK.
While you are at this window, it may also be a good idea to clear your Cookies and History.

If the issue still occurs, please do Step 2.

Step 2 - Reset your Winsock and TCP/IP settings:
  • Select Start
  • Type cmd in the Start Search field -- right-click on the cmd program and select Run as administrator
  • In the new command prompt window, type netsh int ipv4 reset resetlog.txt
  • Once the above command completes, type netsh int ipv6 reset resetlog.txt
  • Once the above command completes, type netsh winsock reset catalog
  • Restart your computer.
Once the machine reboots, check if the issue still occurs. If it does, try Step 3.

Step 3 - Reset Internet Explorer configuration settings:
*Note: this step will reset all of your IE settings, including any addons that you may have installed.
  • Launch Internet Explorer.
  • Press the Tools button then Internet Options.
  • Press the Advanced tab and then press the Reset button.
    • In the Internet Explorer Default Settings dialog box, click Reset.
    • In the Reset Internet Explorer Settings dialog box, click Reset.
  • Press Close then OK.
Does the issue still occur?

I wouldn't think so. I would suggest that you download Firefox on the working laptop, then move it across to the non-working laptop, install it and see if the same issue occurs in Firefox.

However, I'm going to ask a few of the other techs to have a look at this.

One suggestion from JSntgRvr was to give OpenDNS a go, to rule out DNS issues. Please let us know if the issue still occurs.

am I correct in assuming that your husband's new laptop is the one with the connection issues...and yours does not...
if so try creating another user account with admin rights on his machine...
what kind of signal strength does it show on his laptop...if its low... try getting closer to the router
