I have multiple computers on a network. I have two laptops that I am using to trouble shoot. One laptop works fine, the other doesn't.

my 2wire has the dhcp via wireless and hard wire. when refresh of ip addy via command line gives a line:

An error occurred while releasing interface Loopback Pseudo-Interface 1 : The sy
stem cannot find the file specified.

when I allow dhcp assigned it gives me the old 192.x.x.x ip my new ip is 172.x.x.x which is pulled by the other laptop fine. But when I set static it goes back to the 192.x.x.x this is even with a new network name, on new wireless channel, and also tried wired and wireless.

so the question is, does the computer store the info, and how do I remove the file that it might be saved in.. Also when going to the network and sharing center it has three connections when I have only one.. Which hasn't been the case. I have yet to go to work and try it on the work network.... and please keep in mind, that i have not had any problems for a year.

Things are run differently at different forums. Here at G2G, we ask that users search for existing threads to see if a solution has already been provided that they can use. If they can't find the info they need, we like for them to start their own thread, as posting in an existing thread may be considered to be "hijacking". So, you did the right thing.

so the question is, does the computer store the info, and how do I remove the file that it might be saved in..

• Select Start
• In the Start Search field type ncpa.cpl and press the Enter key on your keyboard.
• In the new window, right-click on your Network Connection (Local Area Connection for wired, Wireless Network connection for wireless) and select Properties.
• Select Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) and then press the Properties button.
• In the new window, for DHCP you should have Obtain an IP address automatically and Obtain DNS server address automatically selected.

If you already had those selected, and it's still not working, can you please do the following on both of your laptops, and post the results -- please label each log accordingly (i.e. working laptop, not-working laptop).

• Select Start
• In the Start Search field type cmd -- right-click on the cmd program and choose Run as administrator
• In the new command prompt window, type ipconfig /all > C:\ipconfig.txt
• Navigate to your C: drive and open the text file ipconfig.txt -- please copy/paste the contents of this file into your next response.

Hey dan,

Thank you for the welcome. And I used my brain, and did what I thought best as far as threadin.

I swear it is the dhcp server on the router, I am at work right now and it pulls ip addy's just fine. I don't have the other laptop but here is the config of mine on the home network by dhcp and I'll give the one that is required for me to connect via static ip.

although it could be a stored ip on the computer isolated to my home network... so i am a little comfused, as the other latop gets on the network fine, and my windows server was working fine(i disconnected everything from network, trying to isolate(copier repair tech, so I know the basics of isolation))

What's the make and model of your router? I'd suggest trying a powercycle of your equipment.

Step 1 - Powercycle your equipment:

• Turn off all computers/devices that are connected to your router.
• Unplug the power from your modem.
• Unplug the power from your router.
• Wait two minutes.
• Plug your modem's power back in; wait for your modem to boot up (this can take up to two minutes).
• Plug your router's power back in; wait for your router to boot up (this can take up to two minutes).
• Turn on your computers/devices.

its a 2wire modem. I did cold reboots even rebooted with wireless off on the laptop so it wouldn't try to pull ip from router, and plugged in after idle process was at 99%. now the router is giving a 172 ip addy for default gateway, but still not giving appropriate ip for laptop...

I really appriciate you bringing me back to get go and trying basic things that we tend to forget to try.

so in the mean time, I just scripted in for name of router to pull ip addy statically. so that when i'm at all these other random networks(work) then i don't have to go change the tcp/ip properties of the v4 protocol all the time.

again thanks for you're help. we can close this thread for now. Now i'm registered, I can start hitting up some of these other threads and helping where possible, and where my knowledge range reaches.

What you have is a DHCP Tojan. The malware resides on one of your PC's and installs a DHCP server. Whenever a server asks for a DHCP address, the infected box quickly responds updating the DNS addresses to the 69.42 addresses. These DNS servers appear to be shutdown but newer trojans are pushing out addresses which redirect your browser. https://forums2.syma...HCP/ba-p/370377 Still looking at how to remove this particular one.
