I have recently installed a wireless card in my PC. However, as there were no PCI slots free, I took out the modem
card as I have no further use for it.

Now, although I have got my wireless working fine (eventually !!), I am finding that it is taking over 3 minutes from
the Windows splash screen and the little speaker icon appearing to actually starting up my McAfee and networking
software....

Is this something to do with removing my modem card? Is something still looking for/polling something? I have
checked all of my startup programs and there is nothing different to what was there before.

Any ideas please??

Cheers Gremmo

Go to
Start>Right Click on My Computer>Properties>Hardware>Device Manager

Is ther any reference to your old modem still there. It should show yellow exclamation marks or red X
If so then right click on them and unistall. Reboot and see if that helps.
If that doesn't do it then post the following info

If this is a name brand system:
Make
Model
Operating System
Age of the computer
Memory Total
Hard Drive Size, How much free space

If this is custom then We will need the following:

The CPU brand and model
The Motherboard brand and model
Ram amount and speed
Cd\Dvd rom interface IDE/ SATA
Hard Drive size and free space
Any cards in PCI slots
Any software installed\updated and driver updates done just before problem started

All this will help in determining a course of action to best correct the problem you are experiencing.

No sign of it in Device manager. No exclamation marks, etc.

What format would you like my computer details in ? Would a dxdiag output be good ??

Only change is removal of modem card and installation of Netgear wireless card in it's place with appropriate
software from installation CD to manage it ..

Hijackthis logs are only for the Malware forum. Taking modem out and replacing it with wireless should have no bearing on the bootup time.
Drive: C:
Free Space: 12.6 GB<<< keep a eye on this. If it gets down to 8 gigs free you could be asking for trouble
Total Space: 76.2 GB
Have you ran defrag and disk cleanup to get drive in order?
Try this

Lets see what you have in your startup
Please click on
Start>>Run>>Type in msconfig>>>press enter
Now click on Startups
Then uncheck everything and restart.
If system boots correctly and is running smoothly and faster then we have a startup problem
Try going back into msconfig and check one item and reboot
Keep doing that till you have found the problem or all are finally checked.

If this proves not to help then we will move unto Services

Lets see what you have in your startup services area
Please click on
Start>>Run>>Type in msconfig>>>press enter
Now click on Services
Click on Hide All Microsoft Services
Then uncheck everything and restart.
If system boots correctly and is running smoothly and faster then we have a service problem
Try going back into msconfig and check one item and reboot
Keep doing that till you have found the problem or all are finally checked.

OK - following suggested action plan. However, I noticed ONE thing whilst going through the disabling Startup processes that when I looked in the event viewer, whilst it was in it's "Hanging" phase, there was no DCOM error in the event viewer, but after it started continuing the startup phase, this message appeared in the event log.

Transcript of this sequence attached in Startup.doc.

Continuning action plan on Services section....

I think(??) that (afraid that I'm a Unix/Oracle specialist, so not too hot on PCs and Windows!!) that it's something to do with DCOM event/process starting up..

As previously stated, the DCOM error doesn't show in Event Viewer until AFTER system hangup.. Event details shown below...

Event Type: Error
Event Source: DCOM
Event Category: None
Event ID: 10010
Date: 4/13/2009
Time: 11:32:01
User: NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM
Computer: GBODDYPC
Description:
The server {C7E39D60-7A9F-42BF-ABB1-03DC0FA4F493} did not register with DCOM within the required timeout.

Following link as per instructions in the MS Event Viewer, I end up with the program:

C:\Program Files\McAfee.com\Agent\mcagent.exe

Now what the heck do I do ???

Yours well and truly stuck ... Graham

OK -
Good news: I am now no longer getting the DCOM error in the event viewer. Completely deinstalled McAfee used their MCPR utility to make sure that there were no traces of their products and then reinstalled.

Bad News: Made no difference to speed on startup !!!! Aaaaaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrrrgggggggggggghhhhhhhh !!!

Back to drawing board, I guess. Is there any way of getting more debug information as to what the system is
actually doing when it is loading things up into the system tray as it seems to be at this point where I am hitting the problems.....

Hmm it looks like Mcafee could be part of your problem.
You can uninstall it and go to the free antivirus link in my signatur below and get one of the free programs. they are just as good and in some opinions better then the paid versions.
I myself use Avast as my antivirus program and have found it very affective.

But I COMPLETELY deinstalled McAfee (down to using their MCPR product which removes any trace of their software on
the machine) and I STILL got the slow startup .....

Doesn't that eliminate THAT from the line of enquiry ??

I use the McAfee anti-virus, anti-malware and Personal Firewall products, so would I be able to replace them all with the Avast product that you mention ??

Thanks for your time
Graham :)

Antivirus yes
Malware I use Malwarebytes
Firewall GTG TTechs are recommending Comodo
All can be found in the Antivirus or the free software links in my signature.

:)

Let's do some basic maintenance

Go to
Start>>My Computer>>Right Click On 'C" drive>>Properties
Click on Tools tab at the top
In the Error Checking field click Check Now

when that is done
In Defragmentation field click Defragment Now

When done download ATF from my signature below
Install it to your desktop
Click to run the program >> Click Run
Select all and click
Empty Selected

Reboot and let me know how system is running now

If no change then lets do some disk checking with the following 2 checks

Go to
Start>>Run>>>type in Chkdsk /f
click enter...it will probably ask if you want to do this on the next reboot...click Y
If the window doesn't shutdown on its own then reboot the system manually. On reboot the system will start the chkdsk operation
When completed it will boot the system back into windows.

Let me know if this fixs the problem

If this doesn't help then do the following

Go to
Start>>Run>>>type in Chkdsk /r
click enter...it will probably ask if you want to do this on the next reboot...click Y
If the window doesn't shutdown on its own then reboot the system manually. On reboot the system will start the chkdsk operation
This one will take longer the chkdsk /f
Note... there are 5 stages...it may appear to hang at a certain percent for a hour or more or even back up and go over the same area...this is normal...
DO NOT SHUT YOUR COMPUTER DOWN WHILE CHKDSK IS RUNNING OR YOU CAN HAVE SEVERE PROBLEMS... this can take several hours to complete.
When completed it will boot the system back into windows.

Let me know if this fixs the problem

running chkdsk now. Had previously run defrag. Disk was Ok. One thing that I THINK I had noticed previously was that if I did a log off or switch user rather than a full restart, it seemed OK. I shall verify this fact when disk check has completed in a couple of hours, but you just thought I'd mention it in case it was significant to YOU? Chat in a few hours - G
