Hello-

Im sorry in advance if this is in the wrong section, I was not sure where to put it. So here is my crucial problem. I just accidentally deleted ALL of the pictures from my cameras memory card. I was messing around with my camera and accidentally pressed "format" pictures. Next thing I know, ALL of my pictures are gone. I cant believe this has happened. So many great photos gone. Is there any way of getting them back? I tried downloading a few programs including one called "PC Inspector Smart Recovery" and I thought it would work but the program would not recognize my camera on the computer when I plugged it into the USB. It did not come up under E or F drive. Im really confused here. Is there any hope for me? Im using a Cannon PowerShot SD790 IS

Thank you for any help.. im sort of panicking right now about this.

Hello TeeJay007

Welcome to G2G! My name is Oreo Collas and I'll be helping today. Please be sure that you print or copy all of the instructions to a document on your desktop as many of the directions may require you to log into Safe Mode or unhook your internet connection.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Please make sure to read through all the directions and make sure that you understand them completly before doing any thing. If there is something that you do not unsderstand then let me know and I will elaborate. Skipping steps, working out of order, or working ahead of the directions may cause undesireable results.

It's possible that they memory card might have a recycle bin or some folder where it moves deleated pictures to, but I don't think it will do that if you format the card. Unfortunatally I do not think there is any way of recovering these pictures.

Hey there TeeJay007, I'm SongCloud and I might be able to help. :)

Were the pictures saved to the camera memory or were they on a memory card (SD card, memory stick, CF Card)?

If they were on a memory card then there might be something we can do to get the pictures back. To do this you will need to have a card reader on your system. It does not matter whether it is an internal card reader (one that was installed in the PC), or an external card reader (a standalone reader like those 27-in-one readers that they sell). If your printer can read the memory card, then that might work as well. You just have to make sure that when you put your memory card into the reader that you are able to access it through a drive letter, just like you would access a normal drive. (In My Computer you should see a new drive letter for your memory card like F: or H:).

Once you know that you can access the card directly on your machine, please do the following:
  • Download Recuva from here and save it to your desktop.
  • Double-click on RCSetup125.exe to install Recuva.
  • Once it is installed, double click on the Recuva Icon.
  • The Recovery Wizard will start. Simply click Next.
  • Select Pictures as the file type.
  • Select On my media card or iPod for file location.
  • Click Start to have it search through all removable media for any picture files it can find.
IF IT DOES NOT FIND ALL OF THE FILES
  • Click on the button marked Switch to Advanced Mode at the top of the program.
  • Click on the button marked Options.
  • In the Options window click on the Actions tab and check ALL of the tabs in the Scanning section.
  • Click OK.
  • Click on the button marked Scan at the top of the program window. You don't need to change anything else.
TO FINISH RECOVERING THE FILES
  • Create a new folder somewhere for the files to be recovered to. (I would suggest that the new folder be located on the desktop or in your My Documents folder.) Name the folder Recovered.
  • Click the box in front of the files that you want to recover.
  • Once you have all of the files checked, click the Recover... button.
  • Browse to where the Recovered folder that you just made is located and click on it. Then click OK.
  • Once the program is done recovering the files, it will let you know how many it was able to recover. Click OK.
  • If it recovered all of the pictures, then you are done and can close the program.
If you need to recover any other pictures after you have closed the program, you can always re-run the program and have it search for more files.

Please let me know if you have any questions or if you need any further help. Also let me know if you are able to get your pictures back. I hope that you are able to! :)

Hello, Liv44, and welcome to Geeks to Go! :)

I'm SongCloud and I'll be helping you out today.

Just for future reference, the best way to get help is to start a new topic. Those of us who assist in these forums routinely look for topics that have no replies and assist with those first. By piggybacking on another person's topic, especially one that has been resolved, there is a good chance that your issue might not have been seen.

OK, so now let's take a look at your issue. In order for Recuva to work in the memory card, the memory card has to be recognized by the system as another drive letter. Most of the time this would be listed as removable drive. You can try to use your camera, but most of the time Windows recognizes it as a camera device and not as a drive. If you do not have a printer with a built in card reader or actual internal card reader or external card reader, then Recuva will not be able to help you with this. However, if you want to, you can always get an external card reader from Wal-mart or Best Buy for under $20. An external card reader will connect to your machine via USB and will allow you to read from the memory card directly which will allow Recuva to see the memory card itself, and therefore be able to scan it for deleted files.

Please let me know if you have any questions or need more help.

Just as an add on to what others have recommended......
I have used ZAR (Zero assumption digital image recovery). It has served me quite well, and its free.

Please start your own topic

Although your issue may seem similar there can be other factors that may need to be resolved.
By bumping on someone's topic it makes it confusing for the tech to understand who they are helping. This can in turn cause the wrong support to be given and can cause instability or worse to happen to your system.
You have added your help request to someone else's. We routinely look for posts that have no responces so we may help there. Putting yourself in other posts will get overlooked.

Thank you for your cooperation.

I just wanted to say that last night (05-20-2010)
I graduated from the school that I have been at for
my whole life. I captured many of my moments with my
friends and the many loved ones that stood by me in all
of my dreams and many of my goals I achieved. Unfortunately,
after graduation was over somehow my photos accidently got
deleted. I had over 100's of pictures. It was very hard to
accept that it was all gone. Today I talked to my dad and he
mentioned something about a recovery system. With a little bit
of luck and a lot of search, Google led me to this. I gave a lot of
faith and thankfully I got every single picture I took from last night.
I appreciate this post,"IT REALLY WORKED :)".

I see this thread has gathered some interest and note that the following has not been said yet:

If you have any data anywhere that needs recovering - not just pictures on your camera - and you try and cannot get it back, there is still one more option. It is professional services that offer data recovery. It may not be cheap but if the data is important then it might be worth it for you.

Here in Australia I have used Technetics Data Recovery a few times for client jobs and they have done the job no worries, so get the phone book out *gasp* (or just use Google) and look up a professional solution in your area. Call them, ask for a rough idea on price, ask if they do free quotes, then perhaps do a bit of research and see if you can find any reviews on the business if they are any good or not.

Just a bit of information that may help someone, someday, who might not know or think of this option. :)

Regards,

Troy
