Ok, I recently installed a second hard drive. This one is not the main one and does not have the operating system (Windows XP) installed on it. I use this one mainly for media.
My problem is that whenever I am downloading or editing music in this hard drive, it causes my computer to lag and run slower than usual.
I am not sure if the problem happened because I installed the hard drive incorrectly or something. Any help would be good, I already googled my problem but was unable to find anything.

If this is a name brand system:
Make
Model
Operating System
Age of the computer
Memory Total
Hard Drive Size, How much free space



If this is custom then We will need the following:

The CPU brand and model
The Motherboard brand and model
Ram amount and speed
Cd\Dvd rom interface IDE/ SATA
Hard Drive size and free space
Any cards in PCI slots
Any software installed\updated and driver updates done just before problem started


All this will help in determining a course of action to best correct the problem you are experiencing.
Also since we are dealing with a second drive please include the make and model on that drive.
Need total drive space and free space

My computer is a
Dell Dimension 3000
Windows XP
The computer is 5 years old roughly, but the hard drive having problems is only a couple months old.
The main and good hard drive is 80GB. The second one is 160GB, and it has 115GB free space.

OK then lets get started.

Can you get the free space on the main drive for me

Lets do some basic checking first


Lets see what you have in your startup
Please click on
Start>>Run>>Type in msconfig>>>press enter
Now click on Startup
Next click on your Print Screen on your keyboard
Now go to Start> All Programs > Accessories > Paint
In the empty white area click and hold the CTRL key and then click the V
Go to the File option at the top and click on save as
Save as file type JPEG and save it to your desktop

Lets see what you have in your startup services area
Please click on

Click on Hide All Microsoft Services
Next click on your Print Screen on your keyboard
Now go to Start> All Programs > Accessories > Paint

Just to clarify. This lagging of the computer only happens when download or editing files. When I am just playing the music normally it is fine.

How much memory total?

80GB on the main one, 63GB free. 160GB on the second 117GB free. So 240GB combined. 178GB free combined.

Oh, my bad. Yeah I have 1.00 GB of RAM.

hmmm you may want to increase that to 2 gigs

Because I something might've gone wrong when installing it (idk what), and i needed to redo it.

Memory really won't have that much to do with the access of the second hard drive or slowing your system down. We can do some checking into hard drive and system files to see if there is a issue there. Also in post 5 the picture of startup items is not complete. Could you redo that step and attach a new screenshot of it for me please.
If you would like to then follow the next steps and reply back with results after each one




Go to
Start>>Run>>>type in Chkdsk /f
click enter...it will probably ask if you want to do this on the next reboot...click Y
If the window doesn't shutdown on its own then reboot the system manually. On reboot the system will start the chkdsk operation
When completed it will boot the system back into windows.

Let me know if this fixs the problem

This one will take longer the chkdsk /f
Note... there are 5 stages...it may appear to hang at a certain percent for a hour or more or even back up and go over the same area...this is normal...
DO NOT SHUT YOUR COMPUTER DOWN WHILE CHKDSK IS RUNNING OR YOU CAN HAVE SEVERE PROBLEMS... this can take several hours to complete.
When completed it will boot the system back into windows.

Okay, those were the only things checked in the start up but here is a bigger picture...


I did both of the scans you said. But neither of them fixed the problem.

Ok thanks for the new screenshot. With the tests not showing any problems that is actually good. That means the hd is not a problem then. The core windows is running correctly also.

Let's do some basic maintenance

When done download ATF from my signature below
Install it to your desktop
Click to run the program >> Click Run
Select all and click
Empty Selected

Go to
Start>>My Computer>>Right Click On 'C" drive>>Properties
Click on Tools tab at the top
In the Error Checking field click Check Now

when that is done
In Defragmentation field click Defragment Now

Repeat for second drive

After these are done then reboot and try things. See if that helped at all. Let me know and we can go on to more if needed
