XP Logs On and Then Immediately Logs Off

Hi, running Windows XP Media Center Edition, machine boots to user account screen, when an account is selected it logs on then immediately logs off. So far have reloaded userinit.exe from boot disk with no luck. Requesting help on next step.

Hello, mjabaley, and welcome :) to Geeks to Go!

Please logon to safe mode. We will be doing System File Checker. We need to verify that all Windows System files are intact and in their original versions.

How to restart in to safe mode and run System File Checker:
  • Restart the computer.
  • When it boots up and you see the first screen, repeatedly tap F8.
  • A screen with options for safe mode will appear. Select safe mode with command prompt
  • Logon if needed.
  • Please place your Windows XP Media Center install/recovery disc in to the drive.
  • In the command prompt window, please enter sfc /scannow

In addition, make sure to let the System File Checker finish. It may take a while.
