i do not have the windows cd. is there anything i can do about this? any help would be great! thank you

Not without a CD, no. How come you don't have a CD?

What is the make and model of your laptop?
Also click on "Everest Instructions" in my sig and follow the steps.

You can probably get the CD from your manufacturer or a friend. (As long as the CD is the same XP version (Home or Pro) and it has the same service pack that was installed when you bought your computer)

Oh yea, I never thought about that. Hp computers have a recovery partition that you can use to recover your PC.
http://h10025.www1.h...ocname=bph07145

Read that, and you should do a non-destructive recovery in order to keep all your data and programs. After the recovery, you should update AV software and install the latest XP hotfixes.

EDIT: First of all, how did this problem happen in the first place. We could then try to fix it without a recovery.

Also, if you do a recovery, the computer will revert to factory settings, and all the software you had may be lost, along with any other files from My Documents.

IF you want to know how to backup them, then read this: https://sites.google...without-windows
I didn't finish writing this tutorial, but you should be able to figure out things.

Unfortunately even if you had the CD, there is a good chance that you will not be able to recover from this error. The file in question (WINDOWS\System32\Config\System) is the location of the HKLM\SYSTEM branch of the windows registry. As Edge2022 said, you might be able to restore the file if you get a Windows Installation CD from a friend as long as it is the same type (XP Home or XP Pro). You also might be able to contact HP and see if they can send you a support disk. Also check to see if there is a recovery partition on your laptop. If there is, you might be able to restore the file from there.

Let us know if you need more help.

Yes, I never thought about that tho.

1. If you have Windows CD, follow the steps from here: http://icrontic.com/...pair_windows_xp

2. If you don't have Windows CD...
Download Windows Recovery Console: http://www.thecomput...om/files/rc.iso
Download, and install free Imgburn: http://www.imgburn.c...hp?act=download
Using Imgburn, burn rc.iso to a CD.
Boot to the CD...let it finish loading.
When the "Welcome to Setup" screen appears, press R to start the Recovery Console.
Then, follow the steps from here: http://icrontic.com/...pair_windows_xp, starting below this picture on page 1:

You could also click "Recovery Console Instructions" in my sig to find out how to burn a recovery console boot disc.
The follow the steps from http://icrontic.com/...pair_windows_xp to solve your problem, hopefully.

You are not supposed to unzip the RC.iso file that you first downloaded. Check my sig for the detailed instructions.
