one day i turned on my computer and a notice came up after i logged in but before everything loaded up giving me two options; buy windows vista, or buy later. for the past like 2 months i have just been saying buy later and then it lets me on my computer with some restrictions and almost no security system because it wont let me run anything. when i purchased my laptop in 2007 it came with windows vista but i wasnt givin any codes to redeem it which would have also been helpful. i dont want to spend 80 bucks on an operating system when i should have one. one the bottom left of the background there is a little notice that doesnt go away saying that i do not have a genuine copy of windows vista. can anyone help me.

hello bosredsox1992

where did you buy your computer? was it brand-new when you bought it or was it secondhand?

Please run the MGA Diagnostic Tool and post back the report it shall produce:
  • Download MGADiag to your desktop.
  • Double-click on MGADiag.exe to launch the program
  • Click "Continue"
  • Ensure that the "Windows" tab is selected (it should be by default).
  • Click the "Copy" button to copy the MGA Diagnostic Report to the Windows clipboard.
  • Paste the MGA Diagnostic Report back here in your next reply.

The laptop should have a product key sticker on the bottom, that's the important part of Windows for you.
Have you made (or do you have) the recovery CD's for the system?

The first thing to try would be to activate Windows through Microsoft. Here's a link that describes it: http://www.microsoft...vation-faq.aspx

usasma is correct, I second his instructions. According to MGADiag:

Validation Diagnostic:
Resolution Status: N/A

it needs to be activated. If there's any way that you can enter a new product key try entering the one from your Windows Vista Home Basic sticker on the bottom of your computer. At that point try to activate over the internet. If you still have trouble, activate over the phone. You may get transferred to a human through which you may get a replacement product key. Your key, after all, should be genuine if you bought the laptop, and Microsoft owes you a new one if it's not working.

We are having close to the same problem with one of the 2 laptops we got from best buy around early 2007. The thing worked fine for about 2 years now (just long enought for the warrenty to be gone) and now it is telling "windows vista ™ Build 6000 this copy of windows is not genuine" in the bottom right hand corner.

to top it all off we cant get the system disk or the back up disk to read in the cd rom too so we cant even start there.

Any help would be great We already spend 6 hours on the phone with Microsoft.
