Well we do seem to be rid of Dr. Watson however still get the CManager error meesage when we log on. Afraid I don't understand the instructions on the secure sites. Where do I look for Help About so that I can check on the encryption level? Thanks for your help.

We use SBC Yahoo browser instead of IE, but I opened it and checked Help About and it indicated 128 bit cypher so I cut and past some favorites from Yahoo to IE and the same problen with secure sites. Also still getting the CManager error message. Anyway here is the log:

Check the following items in HijackThis.
Close all windows except HijackThis and click Fix checked:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TimeSink Ad Client] "C:\Program Files\TimeSink\AdGateway\TSAdBot.exe"

O4 - Startup: Connection Manager.lnk = C:\Program Files\SBC\Connection Manager\CManager.exe

Reboot into safe mode and delete:
C:\Program Files\TimeSink <= entire folder

Boot back to normal and let me know.

Regards,

I assume that with secure sites you mean https sites.

Can you let me know what happens exactly when you try to reach one=

Click Start > Run > copy&paste regedit /e C:\https1.txt "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\https" > OK

This will create the file C:\https1.txt
Post the content of that file.

Correct - it will not open https sites. They look like this:

The page cannot be displayed
The page you are looking for is currently unavailable. The Web site might be experiencing technical difficulties, or you may need to adjust your browser settings.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Please try the following:

Click the Refresh button, or try again later.

If you typed the page address in the Address bar, make sure that it is spelled correctly.

To check your connection settings, click the Tools menu, and then click Internet Options. On the Connections tab, click Settings. The settings should match those provided by your local area network (LAN) administrator or Internet service provider (ISP).
See if your Internet connection settings are being detected. You can set Microsoft Windows to examine your network and automatically discover network connection settings (if your network administrator has enabled this setting).
Click the Tools menu, and then click Internet Options.
On the Connections tab, click LAN Settings.
Select Automatically detect settings, and then click OK.
Some sites require 128-bit connection security. Click the Help menu and then click About Internet Explorer to determine what strength security you have installed.
If you are trying to reach a secure site, make sure your Security settings can support it. Click the Tools menu, and then click Internet Options. On the Advanced tab, scroll to the Security section and check settings for SSL 2.0, SSL 3.0, TLS 1.0, PCT 1.0.
Click the Back button to try another link.

Didn't realize how dependent we had become on being able to access this type of site. Appreciate your help.

Looks like the Yahoo Browser took over that protocol.

I think I can change it to IE. Is that what you want to use?

I prefer Netscape but have not put it on the home computer yet. Our service provider recommends Yahoo, but IE works too. They are all about the same so we really don't care as long as it works again on https sites.

Save https1.txt as a backup.

Copy the part in bold below into notepad and save it as https2.reg

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\https\DefaultIcon]
@=hex(2):25,53,79,73,74,65,6d,52,6f,6f,74,25,5c,73,79,73,74,65,6d,33,32,5c,75,\
72,6c,2e,64,6c,6c,2c,30,00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\https\shell\open\command]
@="\"C:\\Program Files\\Internet Explorer\\iexplore.exe\" -nohome"

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\https\shell\open\ddeexec\Application]
@="IExplore"

Doubleclick that file and open IE.
In IE under Tools > Internet Options > Programs tab > click Reset Websettings and surf to: http://www.verisign....isor/check.html

Let me know the testresults.

Preformed all instructions. Verisign said everything was ok (no upgrades required, strong encryption supported) but still cannot open https sites in either Yahoo or IE. What next? Thanks.

Download adsspy from
http://www.bleepingc...iles/adsspy.php

Run a scan and delete the streams attached to SYSTEM.INI

That should get rid of the trojan or at least enable AVG to quarantaine it.

I'll have to think real hard about what else could be wrong with visiting secure sites.

Let me know how you get along with adsspy

Downloaded and ran adspy. Reran MSCONFIG and no error messages. Still cannot get on https sites. The only thing we didn't try on the duxcw site is delete IE and reload. I suppose that is next? Thanks.
