Unstable graphics card?

I'm using an Acer Aspire 8930 and when i try to play some of my steam games the graphics go berserk. All of the starred recomended settings are at high and when i first ran a test server my fps was at two hundred. Now the fps never gets any higher than 30 even with settings all the way low.
System Specs
Quad-Core 2ghz 1066mhz FSB 6mb L2 cache
Nvidia 9700m GT
4gig DDR3 with 2 gigs still free when i launch css
500gig 5k rpm drive

This computer also has trouble running 1080p mkv files although it runs blueray fine. My Gcard drivers are also all up-to-date, do you guys know how i can fix this?
