My Dell Inspiron 6000 laptop won't connect to the internet at all :) . Its using a Broadcom 440x 10/100 Integrated Controller but both the wired and wireless won't connect. I'm really only worried about the ethernet but it hasn't connected in a year. Other computers on the home network work but not this one. After working on it my own I can get the windows update to connect but my browsers still won't work. Any help? Thanks :)

Hey con3636,

Try restarting your machine in Safe Mode with Networking, and then see if you can connect to the Internet using your preferred web browser.

Step 1 - Restart your machine in Safe Mode with Networking:
Please restart the problematic machine in Safe Mode with Networking and then see if you can get an Internet connection; can you?
*Note: You will not be able to use a wireless connection while in Safe Mode; please ensure all tests are performed with a wired (Ethernet) connection.

If you were able to get a connection in Safe Mode, please do Step 2; if you were not able to, please do Step 3.

Step 2 - Generate a startup and uninstall list:
Please download HijackThis (if you do not already have it) and install it -- once it is installed, restart your computer. Once the computer starts up (ensure you are not in Safe Mode), can you please launch HijackThis and then select the option Open the Misc Tools section -- select Generate StartupList log. Save the startup list in a safe location. Now select the option Open Uninstall Manager and then click Save list -- save it to a safe location. Please post the contents of the startup list and the uninstall list in your next response.

Step 3 - Connectivity test:
  • Press Start
  • Select Run
  • Type cmd and press OK
  • In the new command prompt window, please type the following commands (*Note: each ping will take approximately 10 seconds to complete; wait for the command prompt to return before you type the next one. Also, the single '>' and double '>>' are intentional; please type the commands exactly as they appear):
    • ipconfig /all > C:\results.txt
    • route print >> C:\results.txt
    • ping 127.0.0.1 >> C:\results.txt
    • ping google.com >> C:\results.txt
    • ping 209.85.171.100 >> C:\results.txt
  • Once the above commands have completed, navigate to your C: drive and open the text file results.txt -- please copy/paste the contents of this file into your next response.
Thanks,
- Dan

Sorry about the delay, it should move pretty quickly from here.

No worries.

I see that you have both Zone Alarm and Norton installed on the machine; either of these could be causing your issue. For this reason, I would suggest that you try removing Zone Alarm first (Step 1) and see if the issue persists; if it does, then try remove Norton (Step 2).

Step 1: Remove ZoneAlarm:
Please try to Uninstall ZoneAlarm following one of the methods suggested at this website.

If after removing Zone Alarm you are still experiencing the issue, try Step 2.

Step 2: Remove Norton:
Please download the Norton Removal Tool -- once it is downloaded, move it to the Dell computer and then run it. Restart the Dell machine once the Norton Removal Tool is complete and then see if you can connect to the Internet; can you?

I'm glad to hear your issue has been resolved :) Was it Zone Alarm or Norton? Depending on which program you removed, please ensure that your system is still protected (i.e. you have the right amount of software security applications) -- Preventing Malware and Safe Computing.
