Don't have a clue what I did wrong, I did read the Dummies book. Any help?

Hi and welcome to Geeks to go.

Lets see if I can start the ball rolling and help out.
There are a few ways to create a folder. If on the desktop, right click with the mouse to get a menu. Go down to "new" and that will display another menu. In that menu click on "folder".
At this time you can name the folder, otherwise it gets named "new folder".

While in "my documents", click on "file (upper left), and choose new folder.

As for the files you are trying to create, we need more info.
What type of file? Such as word, excel, power point, jpg, bmp, etc? They are too numerous to list.
How are you creating the test files?
What program are you using?
