You're on the right track as far as your wants are concerned. Its accually cheaper to build a near top of the line computer and then keep it for 7+ years than it is to keep switching/upgrading all the time.

As for what you want, here's a ballpark design.

case:
http://www.newegg.co...N82E16811147001

processor:
http://www.newegg.co...N82E16819103436

Motherboard:
http://www.newegg.co...N82E16813128275

graphics card:
http://www.newegg.co...N82E16814102405

RAM:
http://www.newegg.co...N82E16820145440

hard drive:
http://www.newegg.co...N82E16822144319

DVD/CD burner:
http://www.newegg.co...N82E16827130034

Flatscreen monitor:
http://www.newegg.co...N82E16824009029

It puts you at $577 minus the monitor, and at $805 with it. I would recomend ordering from this site. They have the best prices and the best shipping industry wide, as well as solid customer support. You'll probably get your parts within 3-4 days.

Hi krishiyer,

I see you got lots of help, the list JourneyMan gave you is pretty good for the price with a few exceptions,

The cpu is a mobile 2600+, it will work but could be difficult to set up with some mobo's/bios so I would recomend Amd Athlon 2600+ barton core. Don't get a OEM processor the warrenty is only 30 days and it don't come with a heat sink (hs). This is not avalible at this time at new egg, so try zipzoomfly.com

The video card is pci express and the gigabyte mobo don't support it you would need a agp video card for that mobo.

I give you this Link it has some pretty good guids on building computers, give it a look.

I know AMD processors are a little cheaper than Intel ?. Can you suggest me equivalent CPUs of AMD with performance equivalent to Intel Pentium P4 CPU 3.2 Ghz ?. This is what I use at work and is pretty good in terms of processing power

You would need a AMD 3200+ to have the same "power" as that P4.
Yes I personally prefer AMD and always recommend them.

Any other questions just Ask'em

oops, didn't notice the incompadability with the graphics card, sorry.

Umm, its been my experiance with AMD chips that the mobile units are pretty easy to configure. I liked the chip because its amazing performance for that price, and since its an Athlon Mobile you'll get a very cool chip. Makes it easy to overclock too if you want too.

If you want a mega computer that will last for many many years, I'd recommend spending the extra few $150 to get an Athlon64 and this motherboard:

Chip:
http://www.newegg.co...N82E16819103514

Motherboard:
http://www.newegg.co...N82E16813186037

That guy is just a small step down from AMD's ultra, $850, industry changing FX55. It costs $600 less and outperforms everything Intel has to offer. Just $150 more and you would have one of worlds best chips, of the next generation design which the new Windows will support very well, plus I think you can get another 2 years usage out of it compared to the Barton core chip. $150 for 2 years ain't bad.

Oh yea I agree the mobile chips for the price are very good and run cooler but being he is a first time builder I wouldn't want to confuse him with config problems, other then that it would be fine.

Hi Guys,

Thanks a lot for all your replies. I am going to try to look at all the component prices and put up the final configuration. Please bear with me till then.

Like Doby mentioned, I am a first time builder and so will not be doing any overclocking or anything fancy for now.

Also, is there any other tool I need to put the computer together apart from screw drivers.

Its a good idea to were a wrist strap that prevents static electricity in your clothing from discharging into computer parts as you touch them, this can damage them.

You can just touch a metal object such as the case to discharge the static just remember to do so before touching a part.

Also work on a tile floor not carpet, don't wear cotten clothing.

None

Go with amd 64 3200+ 939 socket base

also a gigabyte 939 socket mobo

Look into pci xpress over agp on graphics

Check out the nvidia geforce 6600 gt pci xpress card

1 gb corsair ddr 3200 ram

160 gb HD western digital 8 mb buffer and 7200 rpm

Search all of these parts on pricewatch and you'll lookin at a kicking gaming system for about 600. Check it out and tell me what you think

Make sure your mobo supports amd 64 939 socket base

make sure you look into sata hd, not IDE based

don't waste money on faster ram, it's only up to 400 mhz, so don't waste extra cash and buy 440 mhz or whatever. Ram is dirt cheap and you won't see the difference

See ya
