win/dir/sys32/drivers/retview.exe

Is that all it says? Tell me the full error code, and message.
What error message does XP give you when you try to install Yahoo Messenger.

Can you install in safe mode? Does the error come up in safe mode?

Upon startup the computer says it can't find the, win/dir/sys32/drivers/retview.exe
file, that is the only message I get.

I haven't tried installing yahoo messanger in safe mode. It just says that it can't be installed after it has gone thru the process of installing.

retview.exe doesn't bring any hits on Google, so some kind of infection is possible.

I suggest you go to the Malware Forum and run all the steps located in the START HERE. These self-help tools will help you clean up 70% of problems on your own. If you are still having problems after doing the steps, then please post a HiJackThis Log in THAT forum. If you are unable to run and/or post a HJT log, then post that in your initial post in the topic you create in that forum.

If you are still having problems after being given a clean bill of health from the malware expert, then please return to THIS thread and we will pursue other options to help you solve your current problem(s).

I was wondering about that too. Most likely an infection.

ok, maybe a dumb question, but how do I run the hijackthis, log? Do you think not being able to install yahoo messenger might be virus related too?

I did do a format c and used the reinstall disk last week, is it possible that didn't get rid of the virus? Everything else is working fine, as far a speed while I'm browsing and no pop ups.

If you format a drive, it wipes ALL the data on it, including any viruses. You must have got one after the fresh install. Once installing Windows, your computer is VERY vulnerable (this is why MS releases many hotfixes).

Do you think not being able to install yahoo messenger might be virus related too?

Most likely.

ok, maybe a dumb question, but how do I run the hijackthis, log?

Run the program, and click on "Do a System Scan and Save a Logfile"
Once the scan is completed, Hijackthis will show you the log.
