Just been on my son's computer and found the following in the HJT log:

F2 - REG:system.ini: UserInit=C:\WINDOWS\system32\userinit.exe,C:\WINDOWS\system32\twex.exe,

I also found the file twex.exe and twext.dll in the sys32 folder. (edit: since found that perhaps twext.dll is a genuine file - according to my own research).

I've run rooter.exe and OTListIT as well.

I thought I'd have a go at removing the HJT entry and deleting the twex.exe file in safe mode, but in safe mode it wouldn't allow me to delete it...

So back in normal mode I used Icesword to delete the file, which it did successfully. I then ticked HJT this again to remove the entry but on reboot the entry is still there (though the file twex.exe still appears to be deleted from sys32). Should I also remove twext.dll, do I still have a problem and what else should I do?

Some further info:

This entry in OTListit:

SRV - (IJINJ [Disabled | Stopped]) -- File not found

refers to an old infection he had which I cleared - but obviously I didn't delete the service, though the file is gone and the service disabled. I can fix this but will wait for a full fix.

My son knows nothing about this entry:

C:\Program Files\PatientRunnerServer\mysql\bin\mysqld-nt.exe - unless it relates to one of the many P2P apps or such like that he runs.

I notice his IE is way out of date, but he only ever uses Firefox, apart from where IE gets used automatically for windows updates etc.

He has a lot of weird stuff on his computer, so if you're not sure about something ask.

Below is the original HJT log, the rooter.txt (before I removed the file) and the OTListIt log (before I removed the file)

hello

Looking at your system now, one or more of the identified infections is a backdoor Trojan.

If this computer is ever used for on-line banking, I suggest you do the following immediately:

1. Call all of your banks, credit card companies, financial institutions and inform them that you may be a victim of identity theft and to put a watch on your accounts or change all your account numbers.

2. From a clean computer, change ALL your on-line passwords for email, for banks, financial accounts, PayPal, eBay, on-line companies, any on-line forums or groups you belong to.

Do NOT change passwords or do any transactions while using the infected computer because the attacker will get the new passwords and transaction information.

Before we begin, you should save these instructions in Notepad to your desktop, or print them, for easy reference. Much of our fix will be done in Safe mode, and you will be unable to access this thread at that time. If you have questions at any point, or are unsure of the instructions, feel free to post here and ask for clarification before proceeding.

Download SDFix and save it to your Desktop.

Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%
(Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix)

Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, the Advanced Options Menu should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter.
  • Choose your usual account.
  • Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
  • Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
  • It will remove any Trojan Services and Registry Entries that it finds then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
  • Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
  • When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
  • Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt
(Report.txt will also be copied to Clipboard ready for posting back on the forum).
  • Finally paste the contents of the Report.txt back on the forum.

hello

Download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. If you don't know how to disable them then just continue on.

  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.

  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt log in your next reply.

I downloaded the Combofix to the desktop but before I could disable the Antivirus (CA Antivirus) it detected it as Win32/Nircmd.A - one instance, which was deleted, and another instance, infected.

I assumed that this was the AV detecting Combofix as an infection, so I "disabled" the antivirus, first by putting it on snooze for 60 mins, and then I went to Task Manager and found 3 processes associated with it still running so I did "end task" on those. The icon in my systray for the AV disappeared, so I re-copied Combofix to the desktop (it had been deleted) and then double clicked it.

I then got a notice (with 2 loud beeps from the computer) that

Combofix has detected the following real-time scanner to be active:

CA Antivirus

I needed to disable the AV before proceeding or Combofix could give unpredictable results or even do possible machine damage. It instructed me to turn off Av before hitting OK button.

I realised that it was probably because I had paused the protection rather than disabled it that I got this message so I restarted my AV and disabled it, and went ahead with Combofix, this time without the error message.

I ran Combofix and no problems except on restart it said not to run any programs - I forgot there were automatic programs on startup - the Weather tracker one didn't start, but brought up a message saying it had encountered a problem and needed to close. I left the Ok button alone and let Combofix run. Similarly, the Memeo autobackup did it's thing - however Combofix completed and here is the log:

(By the way I ran HJT again and the F2 value has gone now):

Hey I hope you don't mind me posting some extra unasked for info, but as we are on opposite sides of the world I thought it might save a bit of time......I might be in bed by the time you get this....

I've just run a MBAM scan over the computer, including the E drive and the L drive and there was zilch.

I ran another HJT log, to my novice-trained eye it doesn't look too bad, but I'm sure there are still some things to take care of out of the Combofix post.

Note that I have since uninstalled Limewire (as he hasn't been using it for ages) but he insists on keeping U-Torrent :)

# In the next dialog, select all drives showing

You may have noticed I have a network drive with a few hundred GB on it. I'm expecting when I tick all drives it will include the network drive as well. This drive is used by several family members. Unfortunately only a small portion is used by the user of the infected computer - most is taken up by other people's files. When I did the MBAM scan I included this drive to play safe. MBAM scanned the infected computer, the external drive attached to it then started on the network drive. I made sure it scanned all the files related to the user of the infected computer and then it started going through the other sectors. After 6 hours it had still not completed, so as at that point I had zero infections and was confident the rest of the files were OK, I aborted the scan.

Do I really need to include this drive?? I guess I know the answer - it's not a complete scan without it. However although this drive is used for backups, it is only things like photos, music and movies that go on here - no system files.

I'm prepared to give it a miss, at least at this stage - since the scan "may take some time" - if something turns up on the main computer or E drive then perhaps I can do a double check on it....??

Given what it says, perhaps I should just scan the hard drive and not the external one as it is USB......

Thats what I said to do, or at least what I meant.

I removed that link, you shouldn't post things like that in public

Since my last post, I saw Metallica's mention about the vulnerability in old versions of Adobe acrobat reader.

So before I did anything else I downloaded version 9.1 - it was while using Acrobat that I found he had a trojan on his system, so I was keen to fix that first.

I have done the OTMI - there were files required to move on reboot so I did that and on reboot the log popped up automatically but I checked in the OTMI folder and there was only one file there - so it's the same thing.

I'm posting that first because running the other scan might take some time and I can't always get to this computer.

So here's the OTMI log for now:

OK - so I went to run RootRepeal, followed all the instructions, but silly me I still had this browser window open - realised as soon as I hit to start scan, tried to close the window but too late - BSOD about fatal error and "if this is the first time you have seen this screen.......about possible hardware conflicts etc etc....writing to minidump...windows needs to restart.....which it did.

Perhaps the Canned needs a reminder to close the browser before starting - yes I did read the bit about "close all programs" but that comes after "click OK to start the scan" !!! (Maybe some editing required for idiots like me!!!) :) This is what happens when offspring is nagging you to "get out of my room already!!

On the subject of close all programs - does that include disabling antivirus, and anything else running in the system tray or only the programs with tabs on the system tray?? I'm guessing I should - and probably disconnect from internet as well?

I also noticed that a settings.dat file was on the desktop - should I delete that before I start again or is it Ok to just go ahead anyway?

Do you want me to have a go at moving

File delete failed. C:\WINDOWS\temp\ib2 scheduled to be deleted on reboot.

File delete failed. C:\WINDOWS\temp\ib4 scheduled to be deleted on reboot.

with Icesword or do you have something else in mind?

Next time I'll wait till he's out of the way. And he's been back on the computer after I told him to stay off it till it was fixed. :)
