Hi there

My computer is just 700Mhz processor and 256 mb ram. Total memory is around 18 gb. C drive 9.75 gb. D driver aroudn 8 gb. I use windows XP professional

I know its slow at the basic.

But when I formated all the drives and when it becomes all clean, it runs fine.

But when now, it is toooo slow. Every now and then the computer would give me the message, windows is increasing the size of virtual memory.

I don't think I have any spywares or viruses.

Youtube works fine mostly but the website like metacafe works sooo slow. Usually the online streamings work slow. On the other hand, google video works perfect.

Why my system is so slow? Is it heavy? In fact, I have about 8 gb free space out of 18 gb memory. Why it gets slow with time whereas it works fine when I use it after fresh formatting.

I have been planning to ask this question in this forum for long, finally posting it today.

In Addition please supply:

Age of the computer : not sure but i bought this laptop second hand in oct 2006
Memory Total : C driver 9.75 gb, D drive 8.86 gb
Hard Drive Size, How much free space : free space, C drive 3.97 gb, D drive 4.78 gb

I'm sorry if my reply is weird, its just because I'm not so literate in this stuff


About the software and/or hardware, I can't remember. I guess it happens gradually. If I can think of any program, my deep guess would be Skype maybe.

Lets take a look at the hard drive and see what you have.

Go to
1: Start
2: My Computer
3: Right Click on "C" drive
4: Click on Properties
5: In this field it will tell you total drive space and also free space

2. You need more RAM. XP really likes to deal with at least 512 MB of RAM.
3. How much free space on C, and D drives?

Open it.
In left pane expand Computer folder.
Click once on Summary
In upper menu, go Report>Quick Report-Summary
Save it in text file, and paste it in your next post.

Ok now we are getting somewhere. Please go HERE and run the online scanner. Crucial scanner will be able to tell you the exact memory that you can install and upgrade to. You don't have to buy the memory from them but you should write the information down. If you need we can help locate it for you.

Let's see if we can speed you up a little.
Go to
Start and then click on My Computer
Right click on your C drive and then go to tools
Click on Defragment Now
In the next screen click on your C drive and then at the bottom click on Defragment

If you are not happy with windows defrag or just want a alternative download Auslogics Defrag from the link in my signature below
I actually like it better then Windows defrag and it does a better job. It will also show you how much speed you have gained when it is done. A nice little added feature.

The maximum amount of memory you can have is 512 megs. That is going to be just enough to make windows happy.
I would suggest to do that unless you want to seriously think about a upgraded system.
The memory you would need is HERE
Keep in mind that you have to buy the memory in pairs to make it work. You will be looking at spending 64 plus shipping for 512 megs. Another option is to:

Look HERE
and you can see for less then 200 dollars you can buy a Barebones system and use your existing cd\dvd drive and save a little money.
I would also suggest a bigger HD like what is listed HERE
That would make your total price about 230 to 240 for a brand new system with shipping.

So my computer is slow, just because it is 256 MBram?

So, since I already have 256 Mb Ram, will I only need to buy 256 more to make it 512? Does my computer have the slot to chip in the new card?


I did the Defrag using Auslogics and it said, speed increased by 15% It also said I need to have Auslogics Boost Speed to improve the performance of windows core, internet browser and disk and registry. So Shall I download and install that too? Do you know any other free program I can use?

You would have to remove the existing memory and replace it with the two new 256 meg memory cards. I'm not a fan of software that tries to boost speed, but Maybe Broni will stop by and let you know what he thinks about using it.

Defrag by Auslogics is good, but I'm also against "magic" programs like Auslogics Boost Speed.
